  • Christopher Columbus was born in Geona, Italy in
    1451.
  • His real name was Cristoforo Columbo

3
Growing Up
  • During the day, Christopher Columbus helped his
    father as a weaver.
  • In the evening, Columbus would listen to the
sailors stories by the wharf. He also taught
himself Latin because that was the language of
    all books written on geography.

Why did he want to read geography books?
4
First Voyage
  • Columbus got his chance to sail when he was 19
years old. The more he sailed at sea, the more
he loved it. On one voyage, his ship was
attacked by a French fleet. Hundreds of sailors
drowned and Columbus was injured. Floating on an
oar, he managed to float to shore, six miles
away. Even this narrow escape did not lessen his
    love for the sea.

5
Why sail?
  • The Far East is made up of the countries of
India, China, and Japan. It is also known as the
Indies. The Europeans traded with the Far East
for spices, jewels, gold, ivory, pearls, and
silk. They relied on a single trade route over
land from Europe to the Far East. It was
dangerous because of robbers and eventually the
trade route was closed down. If they wanted to
trade, they needed to find another way to get
    there..

6
The Ocean Sea
  • Columbus believed the earth was round, and
therefore, he could reach the East by sailing
west. To do so, he would have to cross the Ocean
Sea. Today, the Ocean Sea is known as the
    Atlantic Ocean.

7
Dangers
  • Other people also believed the earth was round.
But they were too afraid to sail because of myths
    such as
  • The ships would catch on fire because the water
    reached boiling temperatures.
  •  The ships would be destroyed by the monsters
    living in the Ocean Sea.
  •  The Ocean Sea was too big to sail across.
  • If a ship sailed west, it would sail downhill.
Therefore, the ship could not return because it
    would have to sail uphill.

8
Planning A Trip
  • Columbus began to plan his voyage
  • One thing stood in his way MONEY.
  • Queen Isabella, of Spain, gave Columbus the money
    he needed for his voyage.

9
Details of the voyage.
  • Columbus set sail on August 3, 1492.
  • Three ships were under his command the Nina,
    Pinta and Santa Maria.
  • About ninety men went on this voyage.

10
Trouble At Sea
  • After a few weeks at sea, the men began to
grumble and complain. Fears, such as sea
monsters, masses of seaweed and the strong wind,
had everyone scared. The crew wanted to throw
Columbus overboard and go back home! Despite
    their threats, Columbus plunged on.

11
Land!
  • On the morning of October 12, 1492, land was
finally sighted. Columbus didnt find a new
trade route, he found The New World!
  • They were so happy to find land that many of the
men cried and kissed the ground.
  • Columbus named the island San Salvador.

  • There were Native Americans on the land. To show
the Indians he was friendly, Columbus gave them
red caps and glass bead necklaces. Columbus was
fascinated with the Indians. In his journal he
wrote The Indians are very handsome with good
faces. Their hair is very coarse, like a horses
tail. Some have paint on their faces, some on
their whole body. They are highly intelligent.

13
Going Home
  • Columbus set sail again and reached the island of
Haiti. He built a fort there and left 44 of his
men. When Columbus returned home, everyone was
amazed with his treasures. He brought exotic
food, animals and plants. Even some Indians came
    home with Columbus!
