Title: Tobacco Usage Among Primary Care Patients in RIOS Net
1Tobacco Usage Among Primary Care Patients in RIOS
Net
2The RIOS Net project focusing on tobacco use in
New Mexico has led to some interesting findings.
So far 17 RIOS Net members in nine different
clinics have conducted the tobacco survey.
Fifteen of the clinicians completed the tobacco
survey on PDAs and two clinicians conducted the
survey using the paper forms. Currently RIOS Net
members have conducted the survey on
approximately 460 patients. The findings in this
presentation entail those surveys that were
collected using PDAs (381). RIOS Net is
continuing its recruitment efforts and its aim is
to collect data from approximately 90 clinicians
from different areas around the state.
3The majority of the participants in the tobacco
survey are in the 45-60 age range followed by
those age 35-45. The majority of the smokers
are, however, age 18-25 with just over half of
those in this age range reporting the use of
cigarettes.
4The majority of the patients in RIOS Net thus far
surveyed represent the white racial category
(74.74), followed by American Indian/Alaska
Native (14.74). Other categories represented
include Asian (6.05), Black/African American
(3.16), Other (.53), Native Hawaiian/Pacific
Islander (.26), White American Indian/Alaska
Native (.26), and White other race (.26).
5The payment source information collected so far
does not appear to reflect findings from other
RIOS Net surveys. The other category is not
well represented, while private insurance is
quite prevalent in the tobacco findings, however,
private insurance is low and the other category
represents a high percentage of payment sources
for the network defining study (PRINS). This
discrepancy suggests that the tobacco data on
payment source may be heavily weighted due to the
eight clinics that have participated thus far and
does not represent the greater New Mexico
population.

7Most of the participants who use tobacco smoke
cigarettes. Many of the respondents reported an
attempt to quit and a large percentage also
expressed a desire to quit.
