Reading, Writing, Romanticism
  • E-train Express Summer Conference
  • June 12, 2004

In the beginning
  • At our first meeting the 5 of us decided we
wanted our project to meet 4 specific goals.

4
Our Goals
  • We would keep in mind the emphasis on writing
    (especially analytical writing) advocated as
state national goals in conjunction w/ the
    American Diploma Project.
  • We would attempt to address core content, and
given our language arts backgrounds, it was
probably inevitable that we chose to demonstrate
using technology to teach concepts associated w/
    Romanticism.
  • We would choose a central component of
Romanticism as the unifying basis of our project.
We quickly realized that nothing is more
Romantic than the heroic protagonist, especially
if that character is also a bit of a maverick who
chooses a code of personal values in preference
to conventional social mores. We called this
    figure the Romantic Individualist.
  • We would insist upon a diversity of heroes in
order to appeal to students of various
    backgrounds achievement levels.

5
Mid-course additions
  • Soon each of us decided on a hero or work to
present. While we were planning our project, we
explored techniques wed heard of but never
tried. At our meetings we brainstormed ways to
apply those techniques to our heroes. We
e-mailed preliminary ideas to the entire group
offered suggestions or posed questions to each
    other.

6
Nearing the deadline
  • We created our final drafts working
independently, continuing to e-mail the entire
group w/ questions suggestions. Cindy Houston
agreed to become our web-guru, she has posted
    our material.

The unfinished finished project
  • What you are about to see is a work in
progress. On behalf of my colleagues--Cindy
Houston, Marion Napier, Bill Madison, Roxanne
Spencer--I welcome you to our web site on
