1Marylands 12th Service-Learning Conference
Telling a StoryThrough Service-Learning
- A unique educational opportunity
2What is Service-Learning?
Service-learning is a teaching method that
combines meaningful service to the community with
curriculum-based learning. Students improve their
academic skills by applying what they learn in
school to the real world they then reflect on
their experience to reinforce the link between
their service and their learning. - Learning in
Deed
3What is the Service-Learning Conference?
For the past 11 years the Maryland Student
Service Alliance, in partnership with several
community based organizations, has hosted a
conference to promote service-learning,
disseminate ideas for outstanding projects,
develop student leadership, and celebrate the
accomplishments of students and teachers in
service-related activities.
4Where and when is the conference?
- The conference is held on the campus of a
central Maryland college when the college takes
its spring break. This years conference is at
the campus of Villa Julie College, in Stevenson
MD, on March 11th.
5This event has exciting activities,
opportunities, and information for everyone.
- Students of all ages participate in
service-learning activities, develop leadership
skills, and learn about innovative projects.
- Teachers and administrators learn new techniques
and ideas to enhance their service-learning
programs.
- Community leaders have an opportunity to network
with teachers and students to promote their
programs.
6Hands-on Service-Learning Projects
These sessions directly engage students in
service-learning activities. Students learn by
participating in hands on activities. In
previous years students - built rain gardens
- helped senior citizens use the Internet - read
to pre-school students - assembled care kits for
homeless shelters
7How To Workshops
These interactive sessions replicate some of
Marylands best service-learning projects.
Workshops presented by students are
encouraged. Past How To Workshops explained
quality projects including - building
bluebird habitats - designing Save The Bay
advocacy murals - organizing Empty Bowls
hunger awareness events - preserving a local
heritage through oral histories This years
workshops will be equally varied and creative.
8Leadership Development Sessions
These breakout sessions present ideas to help
develop the Best Practices in service-learning
projects and develop the leadership roles and
skills of students and teachers.
9The Maryland Student Service Alliance and its
partners are proud to bring this outstanding
learning opportunity to our schools and
community. To offset the cost of a continental
breakfast, lunch, and materials, MSSA requests a
modest registration fee of 15 per person.
