Publication Accessibility

• What is Publication Accessibility?
• It means that the publications available in the
  market are accessible by all kinds of readers
  including the various challenged individuals.
• This involves making publications available in
  accessible formats like Large Print, Braille,
  Talking Books etc apart from the usual Print
  Versions.

Some Facts

• As per United Nations Development Program (UNDP),
  80 of people with disabilities live in
  developing countries
• More than 40 of the worlds visually challenged
  population live in developing countries
• Less than half of the publications are made
  available in the accessible formats in the
  developing countries

DAISY

• What is DAISY?
• DAISY stands for Digital Accessible
  Information System it is a standard for
  producing accessible navigable multimedia
  documents.
• Currently, recommended is DAISY 2.02 Standard
• Very shortly it will be replaced by ANSI/NISO
  Z39.86-2005 Standard commonly known as
  DAISY/NISO Standard

• Why DAISY?
• Using one master source file of a publication
  adhering to DAISY Standard, we can create
  different types of accessible publication formats
  like Digital Talking Books, Braille books, large
  print etc
• Reading experience is very rich as there are
  ample navigational facilities

Talking Book

• What is a Talking Book?
• A traditional talking book is an analog
  representation of a print publication where the
  rendering of the audio is in a human voice.

Digital Talking Book

• A Digital Talking Book (DTB) is a multimedia
  representation of a print publication where the
  rendering of the audio is in a human voice.

DAISY DTB - Technical

• A DAISY DTB can be explained as a set of digital
  files that includes
• One or more digital audio files containing a
  human narration of part or all of the source text
• An optional marked-up file containing some or all
  of the text
• A synchronization file to relate markings in the
  text file with time points in the audio file
• A navigation control file which enables the user
  to move smoothly between files while
  synchronization between text and audio is
  maintained

DAISY Consortium

• The DAISY consortium, headquartered in
  Switzerland, was founded in 1996 which is
  committed to developing equitable access to
  information for people who have a print
  disability.
• Vision
• The DAISY Consortium envisions a world where
  people with print disabilities have equal access
  to information and knowledge, without delay or
  additional expense.
• Mission
• The DAISY Consortium's mission is to develop and
  promote international standards and technologies
  which enable equal access to information and
  knowledge by all people with print disabilities
  and which also benefit the wider community.

DAISY For All (DFA)

• DFA is an initiative by DAISY Consortium to
  spread DAISY in Developing Countries
• India and Thailand are the Regional Resource
  Centers
• Focal points established in Bangladesh,
  Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia, Pakistan,
  Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Laos
  and Cambodia.

DAISY Forum of India (DFI)

• DFI is a forum of organizations in India working
  towards production of accessible materials in
  accordance to the DAISY Standards
• National Association for the Blind Delhi state
  Branch is the regional resource centre under the
  DAISY For All Project
• Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled is the State
  Co-ordinator for DAISY DTB production in
  Karnataka
• DFI invites willing NGOs to become members of the
  Forum and involve in production and/or
  distribution of DAISY DTBs
