Buddhism
  • Buddhism has had a strong influence on Southeast
    Asia.
  • The religion came to the region from both India
    and China.
  • People in Southeast Asia love the Buddha?

River Valley Civilizations
  • Because the geography is so diverse, no one ruler
    could conquer the whole region.
  • Powerful leaders built kingdoms in the river
    valleys. They
  • organized strong armies
  • collected taxes from farmers
  • set up complex irrigation systems for rice
    farming
  • through warfare extended control over neighbors

  • To the north of SE Asia was the powerful
    civilization of China.

  • Vietnam came under Chinese domination in 39AD
  • China ruled Vietnam for over 1000 years
  • As a result, the people of Vietnam are culturally
    Chinese
  • absorbed Confucian philosophy
  • only SE Asian people to live in extended family
    unit
  • Vietnamese language, art, poetry, and customs
    reflect a great deal of Chinese influence
