Background Information

• Otoscope is used to look at eardrum
• Made by Welch-Allyn
• One and two-person eyepieces

• Normal ear appearance can vary
• Physician accuracy low

• Otoscope must be easy to use
• Must enable better teaching methods
• Should give faithful image of eardrum

Design 1 Video Camera

• Attach video camera to back of current otoscope
• Run cords to TV/VCR to allow viewing and recording

• Allows many people to see image simultaneously
• Image quality may be lacking
• Bulky, hard to use

Design 2 Still Camera

• Attach still camera to back of current otoscope
• Physician takes picture at appropriate time
• Physician uses viewfinder instead of eyepiece

• High image quality
• Necessary to develop film
• Cannot give dynamic image
• Somewhat bulky

• Attach digital camera to back of current otoscope
• Can produce short films and still photos
• Physician uses viewscreen

• Image can be stored on computer
