Inquiry-Based Learning
  • Seeking truth, information, and knowledge through
a questioning process (natural way of learning)
  • Learner is involved in his/her own education
  • Rather than memorizing facts to ensure the
correct answer, inquiry focuses on the process
of developing ones skills to solve problems and
    resolve issues

9
Library Research
  • How will you identify and select appropriate
    references for your group presentation?

10
Literature Search Process Research Goals
  • Select and refine topic
  • Develop an effective search strategy
  • Choose or select an appropriate database
  • Cite your sources and use an approved style guide
    (i.e. APA)

11
Select a Topic
  • Example
  • Childhood asthma discuss the etiology (causes)
and treatment options for this illness

12
Refine the Topic
  • Keywords
  • asthma
  • child
  • etiology
  • cause
  • treatment
  • therapy

13
Develop an Effective Search Strategy
  • Before the search begins
  • Organize your search so that you know what you
are looking for before beginning your trek.
  • Searching tools can help you become better
    organized

Primary vs. Secondary Sources
  • Primary Sources
  • Secondary Sources
  • a document or record containing first-hand
information or original data on a topic
  • Examples
  • Interviews
  • Letters
  • Articles (new, original research and findings)
  • Government documents
  • any published or unpublished work that is one
step removed from the original source
  • Examples
  • Articles or essays that describe, critique,
analyze, or evaluate primary source material
  • Textbooks are secondary sources as well!

16
Selected Research Databases
  • Biomedicine
  • MEDLINE
  • PubMed
  • Health and Society
  • Global Health
  • HealthSTAR
  • Cited Reference
  • Web of Science

17
Search Strategy Tips
  • Boolean Operators
  • AND (narrows search, retrieving records
containing all of the terms) i.e. apples AND
    oranges
  • OR (broadens search, retrieving records
containing any of the terms) i.e. apples OR
    oranges
  • NOT (excludes terms from a search, retrieving
records that do not contain the term following
    it.) i.e. apples NOT spartan
  • Wildcard Truncation
  • system returns records on system, systems,
    systematic
  • ? wom?n returns records on both woman and women
    (singular and plural forms)
  • Nesting
  • Parenthesis, () keep related terms together
  • If searching for an exact phrase, enclose phrase
    in quotation marks,

Medline
  • Covers international literature on
  • Biomedicine
  • Allied health fields
  • Biological and physical sciences
  • Information science
  • Related to medicine and health care

19
Dissecting OVID Medlines Mapping Display
  • Where applicable, the keyword term will be
matched to a Medical Subject Heading (MeSH)
  • Explode Select the Explode box if you wish to
retrieve results using the selected term and all
    of its more specific terms.
  • Focus Select the Focus box if you wish to limit
your search to those documents in which your
subject heading is considered the major point of
    the article.
  • The Scope Note provides a brief definition of the
MeSH, and lists additional terms that may be
associated with the MeSH in question

  • Nursing
  • Veterinary medicine
  • Molecular biology
  • Health care system
  • Preclinical sciences

21
A Brief Note on SFX
  • Provides a link between several databases and
    full-text articles
  • Not only does SFX automatically search the
library catalogue for electronic holdings, it
also notifies the user when material is not
    available online

22
Web of Science
  • Multidisciplinary database, references subject
    areas in
  • Science Citation Index
  • Social Sciences Citation Index
  • Arts and Humanities Citation Index
  • Key research tool for performing a cited
    reference search

A Key Cited Article
  • Entman, R. (1993). Framing Toward Clarification
of a Fractured Paradigm. Journal of
    Communication, 43(4), 51-58.

25
Why are Cited References Important?
  • When an author cites the work of others, he/she
creates a link between his/her own research and
what has been researched before. The cited
reference helps you navigate through the
literature forwards and backwards in time. Cited
references enable you to locate related articles.
