Title: Informative Speeches

1
Informative Speeches
  • Created by Sally Landoll
  • For 8th grade Communications

2
Introduction
  • Over the next several days you will be writing
    your informative speech.
  • The speech will include an introduction, a body,
    and a conclusion.
  • The speech should be at least 3 minutes long, but
    should not exceed 5 minutes.

3
What is my speech topic?
  • Your speech topic will be Music and the Movies
  • You will select a movie from the American Film
Institutes Top 100 musical scores. (Note I have
adapted their list and it is now the top 40).
  • Top 40 List

4
Your Introduction is next
  • The introduction sets the tone of the entire
speech. The introduction should be brief and
    to-the-point.
  • First , you will write an attention grabbing
sentence or two about your selected movie.
  • This could include a quote from the movie (go to
    http//www.imdb.com/Sections/Quotes/)
  • or this could include a question or two
  • or this could include a story about the first
    time you saw this movie.
  • Second, you will give the audience a brief
summary (3-5 sentences) of the movie. (go to
    http//www.imdb.com)
  • Finally, you will tell the audience who the
composer is, and list the other two main points.
  • Example I will give you a brief history of the
composer, John Williams, show you a clip from the
movie, and tell you why I think the music is
    important to this movie.
  • Your introduction should be around 9 sentences
    long.

5
Onto the body of your speech
  • You will now research the composer of your movie
  • Use the following websites for help
  • http//www.mfiles.co.uk/film-composers.htm
  • Or go to http//www.google.com and search for
    composers name biography.

6
I found information on the composer, now what
  • Your first body paragraph will give your audience
a brief history of the composer
  • What are some of his/her most famous films?
  • When did they start composing?
  • When did they first make it big?
  • Give an interesting fact or two about the
    composer.

7
The next paragraph
  • In the next paragraph you will describe the scene
you have selected. (The scene you show will be
30 seconds or less). It is important to set up
the scene, so that your audience understands what
    they will be watching.
  • Tell them about what they are going to see in the
    scene?
  • Why you chose the scene?
  • Exactly where does the music enter? Does it only
come in at moments of tension or excitement or is
    it used other places?
  • How does it enter? Does it come in softly or
enter loudly? Why is that important?
  • How does it end? Does it end suddenly or does it
trail off? Why is that important to the scene?
  • Then, show them the scene.

8
In the next paragraph
  • Next, you will answer the following questions
    about the music
  • Is the music used as a crutch, to generate
    excitement or tension?
  • Is it used to complement the feel of the scene?
  • How well-matched is the music to the action or
    mood on-screen?

9
Conclusion
  • Your final thoughts about your movie should focus
    on
  • Why you liked or disliked the music?
  • What you think the music added to the movie?
  • Whether you thought there was too much music in
    your movie.
  • A final thought about your movie, could be a
quote from the movie or encouragement to watch
    your movie (or not).
