Political Cartoons are not your typical cartoon!
  • They are clever.not funny
  • The author is trying to prove a political or
    social point
  • Topic of cartoon is controversial
  • You must know something about current or
    historical events to get it
  • You must use the symbols to infer meaning

Tips for reading a political cartoon
  • Ask yourself what you know about the topic (why
    is it controversial?)
  • Look at all of the details in the cartoon
  • Read all of the words in the cartoon
  • Look for symbols (Ex an American flag stands for
    freedom or the United States, Uncle Sam stands
    for the military, a newspaper or T.V stands for
    the media.)
  • Use your inferencing skills!

  • How is the author trying to prove he thinks that
    too much T.V leads to short attention spans? (How
    is the boy behaving? What does he have in his
    hand?)
