Game Control/Conflict Resolution

Sportsmanship
  • At the end of each game, you will assign a
    sportsmanship rating for each team
  • If players ask you what the rating is, tell them
that you need to discuss it with your partners
first and that you will then hand it to a
supervisor who will be more than willing to
    discuss it

12
Be Preventive!
  • Use a good pre-game captains meeting to set the
    tone, discuss rules and sportsmanship
    expectations
  • Be clear, confident, assertive, and consistent
  • Sell calls when necessary
  • Right or wrong, come up strong!
  • Be Approachable (remember you are customer
    service reps)
  • Watch your body language
  • Listen and let the players vent before responding
  • Dont be afraid to talk to the players (establish
    a good rapport)
  • However, be careful not to socialize with one
    team prior to the game.
  • And never say more than you need to
  • You cannot misquote silence
  • Address issues right away dont let them fester
  • Use a halftime captains meeting if necessary
  • Use a cautionary meeting if teams are unruly

13
Game Control Captains Meeting
Pre/Half/During Play

  • Game times are expected to be started on time
    (Five minute grace period)

watching for in the second half be positive if
    possible
  • Cautionary Meeting during contest
  • Remain composed and calm
  • Ask the captains if they would like to finish the
    game
  • If no, call the game. If yes, then tell them
what needs to improve in order for them to finish
    the game.

What If
  • I cant tell from where the or which fan is
verbalizing his complaint or if s/he is actually
    with the team?
  • The unsportsmanlike wasnt enough to be prevent
    more outbursts?
  • The entire team or both teams are being chippy?
  • A player walks away and says, thats horrible?
  • Two or more players begin shoving each other?
  • Are any of these conflicts
  • What is the difference?

17
Common Situations
  • Thats a horrible call (add Fuing)

  • We call them, we dont count them
  • Or say stop (whatever foul it is they keep
committing) and Ill stop penalizing you

(during play but also during stoppages)
  • If you can explain quickly go ahead otherwise
    say...

or till the offense snaps the ball.
