Title: Gun Control

1
Gun Control
Judy Annan Charleston County School District
2
US Constitution Amendment II A well regulated
militia, being necessary to the security of a
free state, the right of the people to keep and
bear arms, shall not be infringed.
3
The United States leads the industrialized world
in firearms violence of all typeshomicides,
suicides, and unintentional deaths.
4
Murders with handguns increase in SC
East side sees increase in drive by shootings
Black on black crime increases in Charleston
5
Firearms accounted for 77 percent of the increase
in suicides from 1980 to 1992 and were
disproportionately responsible for the increases
among the young and the elderly.
6
Each bullet sold in the United States in 1992
carried an injury price tag of 23including 60
cents for medical care and emergency services,
7.20 for lost work, and 15.10 for lost quality
of life.
7
Data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms (ATF) shows that the number of assault
weapons traced to crime is continuing to climb.
8
Assault weapons' ability to penetrate "any
tactical vehicle in the FBI's inventory" has
prompted the agency to request military armored
vehicles "to give FBI personnel adequate
protection from the .50 caliber rifles" and other
more powerful weapons.
9
In the year 2000, the state of SC had the 2nd
highest occurrence for violent crime among all
the states in the US.
10
In a survey of 800 gun owners, more than 20
percent reported keeping a firearm both loaded
and unlocked in the home.
11
In states where laws provide licenses to carry
concealed handguns, handgun holders have been
arrested for more than two serious violent crimes
per month since the law went into effect
including murder/attempted murder,
manslaughter/negligent homicide, kidnapping,
rape, and sexual assault.
12
Domestic Violence
When there were one or more guns in the home the
risk of suicide among women increased nearly five
times and the risk of homicide increased more
than three times.
13
The massacre of children by children in our
schools has focused new attention on America's
youth gun culture.
14
Is this enough?
15
Million Mom March
