My Family
  • I grew up in a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland.
  • My sister Kerrie now lives in Seattle.
  • My parents both grew up in Montreal, but now live
in sunny Florida with my dog, Blondie.

Favorite Childhood Place? The Library!
  • I spent many hours at the Randallstown Public
    Library.
  • Unfortunately, it burned down in May, 2001.
  • But hurray for the librarians! Theyve created a
    mini-library until restorations are finished.

Library.

Early Inspiration Mary Gamewell
  • Mary was my elementary school librarian for two
    years.
  • She supported my love of reading and encouraged
    my passion for archaeology.
  • She kept me engaged in small theatrical skits and
    other creative activities .

5
High School Highlights
  • I participated in many activities, including the
    school newspaper.
  • I worked backstage on 16 theatre productions,
often as stage manager and twice as director.
  • Strange fact students attempted arson 13 times
on my high school during my senior year.

6
Ready for New Adventures!
  • I moved across the country to attend the
    University of Oregon in Eugene.
  • Eugene home of hippies, Saturday Market, and all
    things liberal.
  • I hope to live in Eugene again one day (the city
is building a new public library!).

Kyle Yamada
  • I met Kyle Yamada freshman year around
    Halloween.
  • We got engaged last February and we are getting
    married this August in Portland.
  • Kyle is in graduate school right now studying to
    become a high school teacher.

8
Favorite Job Bookseller
  • I worked at a bookstore, Encore Books, during my
    school breaks for 4 years.
  • We competed with the local super bookstore. They
had better selection, but we had better
    service.
  • Encore Books went bankrupt 3 years ago. It must
have been contagious because the super bookstore
    went bankrupt too!

9
Seeking Even More Adventures
The Alhambra in Granada
  • I studied in Spain for 10 months.
  • I first lived in Granada and then in Salamanca.
  • Kyle studied in Heidelberg, Germany that year, so
we still saw each other often.

Living in Spain
  • Granada
  • I lived with 2 terrific host families.
  • They treated me well and cooked Spanish
delicacies for me! I also ate a lot of oranges,
    Doritos, and chocolate.
  • Then Salamanca
  • I shared an apartment with an American friend.
  • Back to the real world of cooking for myself.

11
Portland, Oregon
  • For a change of pace, Kyle I moved to Portland
    after graduation
  • I worked at FACCTThe Foundation for
Accountability as a research assistant for 2
    years.

Click here to see a web site I created for FACCT.
12
Documentary
  • I helped Kyle create a video documentary about
the protests surrounding the 2000 National
    Democratic Convention in Los Angeles.
  • I had a fantastic time interviewing people.
  • We sold over 400 copies of the video, including
    dozens to libraries!

13
Epiphany
  • I e-mailed public libraries in the U.S. to tell
    them about the documentary.
  • As I read through their web sites, I appreciated
the range of services that libraries provide and
recognized how Id taken them for granted.
  • (It also happened to be Banned Books Week.)
  • I told Kyle half-jokingly that I should be a
librarian, and as soon as I said it, I realized
    that it was true!
