Title: What is a Healthy Material

1
  • What is a Healthy Material?
  • Pollutant Toxic-Free
  • Bacteria-Free
  • Sound-Free or Sound-Absorbing
  • Radiation-Free
  • Non-Electromagnetic or Conductive
  • What is an Ecologic Material?
  • Renewable
  • Abundant
  • Low Environmental Impact
  • Non-Polluting
  • Energy-Efficient
  • Durable
  • Low-Maintenance
  • Equitable Produced
  • Low-Waste

2
People spend 80-90 of their time indoors
3
EPA researchers indicate that indoor air
pollution levels can be 100 times higher
than outdoors, and may account for over 11,000
U.S. deaths/yr.
4
Indoor Environment
  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
  • Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)
  • Microbial Contamination
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • Chemical Reactions
  • (NOx) Nitrogen Oxide - Tobacco Combustion
  • (CO2) Carbon Dioxide - Complete Carbon
    Combustion
  • (CO) Carbon Monoxide - Incomplete Carbon
    Combustion
  • Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF)
  • Dangers
  • Radon
  • Asbestos
  • Lead
  • Ozone

Ronald Wester, Ph.D., a dermatology researcher at
the University of California, San Francisco has
shown that benzene, arsenic, PCBs, and common
pesticides/insecticides, which could be found in
anyones water supply, all pass through the skin
into the bloodstream.

In this food chain, a toxic substance becomes
increasingly bioconcentrated as it passes from
the water to algae to plankton and finally fish.
Bioconcentration occurs if the toxic substance is
preferentially retained in the organism rather
than excreted. If people eat the toxified fish,
the substance may concentrate still further in
them.

The petrochemical industry from raw materials to
finished products.
12
Some of the important pathways by which toxins
can reach our bodies.

House paints and other architectural coatings
account for 5.7 or 78 tons per day of volatile
organic compound (VOC) emissions in the South
Coast Air Quality Management District. This
exceeds the emissions from the regions gasoline
stations and 15 major oil refineries by 0.3.
All paints, including those applied by industry,
in this four-county California region emit 292
tons per day or 21. VOCs are one of the primary
ingredients in low-level ozone or urban smog. In
the presence of sunlight, they react with
nitrogen oxides produced by burning fossil fuels.
