  • People used folk medicine because there were few
    doctors or hospitals.
  • People often looked after by their own family
    members.
  • Many medicines produced from plants.

  • To cure warts you rub the wart with a garden
    snail.
  • To cure a sore throat, place a salt fish on your
    neck.
  • To cure a headache, place brown paper soaked in
    vinegar on your forehead.
  • To stop a cut, put blatter from a fir tree on
    cut.

  • Small, one-room schools
  • School heated by pot-bellied stove
  • Usually one teacher for all grades
  • Older children helped younger children
  • Teachers very strict and students well behaved.

  • Many games, including hopscotch, marbles,
    jump-rope, Cowboys and Indians
  • During Bonfire night young people would burn
    whatever was available, including outhouses and
    boats.
  • Winter fun included skating and sliding

  • Growing their own food. Many times food could not
    be purchased or it was too expensive. Many
    families also had animals for meat and milk.
  • Bird hunting was popular
  • Boat building was necessary. The men cut their
    own logs to get lumber.

    churches, and schools.
  • Cutting blocks of ice from the ponds in winter to
    place in coolers to keep food fresh.
