Deserts can be well over 100 F. There are cold
deserts and hot deserts. They are located in
Turkestan, Africa, Australia, Patagonian.
3 What are the Characteristics of the Desert?
Some plants in the desert are the Joshua
plant, Saguaro cactus, and the Mesquite tree.
The badger, the burrowing owls, mule deer, and
the cougar are all animals that live in the
desert. Deserts can be warm or cold depending on
where the desert is located. The average yearly
temperature is between 75- 86 F. It rains less
than 12 inches a year.
4Wow Facts
Many interesting things happen in the desert. One
time in 1988 soil was blowing west from Africa.
Then a storm came and pink Saharan frogs rained
down on a British Village.
5 Shelter in the Desert
Houses in the desert are made from mud. Mud is
used to support the houses. There is air
conditioning in the homes of the people in the
desert, so that the people dont get too warm.
The roofs are light colors because then the sun
will bounce off of the roof. This keeps the
house from getting too warm.
6Clothing in the Desert
Most people in the desert wear loose clothing.
They wear shoes such as sandals or flip flops.
Sometimes they wear short pants and sometimes
they wear a long cloth with a hood. This protects
them from sunburn. The people in the desert will
sometimes use suntan lotion.
7Transportation in the Desert
Camels can have people ride on their backs.
Airplanes can be used to travel far distances.
Horses are used to help carry mail from place to
place. Automobiles are used to carry goods.
Boats are used by people that live near the Nile
River.
8Jobs in the Desert
In the desert some people work in oil fields.
Others work in factories and shops. Some people
work in schools and hospitals.
