From Anchorage to Nome

• 12 to 16 dogs and their mushers run over 1,150
  miles through the frozen hills, rivers, forests
  of Alaska.
• 10 to 17 days ?????
• Below zero temperatures and heavy winds

Why do they run this race?

• In 1925, some children were sick and they needed
  some medicine. The only way to get it to Nome was
  by dog sleds. Balto was a hero with his brave
  actions.

What is a musher?

• Mushers take good care of their dogs.
• They feed them and make sure their dogs stay
  healthy.
• A musher is a man or a woman.

Lets take a look at a dog sled.

• The dogs are attached to the front. The musher
  will stand at the back and steer the dogs. There
  will be about 12 to 16 dogs that will start the
  Iditarod race. Some will not finish.

Who will get the red lantern?

• The musher who comes in last gets the red lantern.
