2We met in the library with some of the teachers
and the principal of Jane Addams. We were given
a folder of information and an overview of the
processes going on in their school. Refreshments
were also provided. After this we visited
classrooms.

5- Goal 1-
- Â In the area of reading (both decoding and
comprehension), over 75 percent of our teachers
are in book groups discussing the Mosaic of
Thought book and a book called On Solid Ground.
These books talk about reading strategies to use
in the classroom. The advantage of the book
groups is that the teachers can share classroom
ideas that apply to their readings. It is very
exciting to see the teachers use these strategies
in the classroom! In looking at successful
schools with high achievement in the reading
area, the strategies from these two books are
used in their classrooms. There is also a select
group of teachers attending a Comprehension
Consortium to learn new strategies to help with
reading comprehension. The excitement is in the
air! - Information taken from Jane Addams Web Site
6- Goal 2--Math Facts
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Our
second school goal is for our Jane Addams
students to master their math facts. Flashcards
were sent home with all students to practice
their facts at home. We ask that our parents help
us in our vital home-school link and practice
math facts with their children at least two to
three times per week. We have also introduced an
out-of-level math class in grades 2 through
grades 6 this year. This has enabled some of our
students to move to higher-level math concepts,
has allowed other children to be the "math star"
in the classroom, and still other children the
extra help in math that they need.

7- Goal 3--Student Enthusiasm
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Jane Addams staff
is also concentrating on the area of student
enthusiasm in relation to reading. The Student
Enthusiasm Goal Team designed a survey that is
administered across the grade levels once a
month. This survey asks students how much they
like or are "enthusiastic" about different areas
of reading. The classroom teachers are then going
over the questions the students said they weren't
"enthusiastic" on and making changes to their
presentation of lessons. Student enthusiasm is
directly linked to student achievement.
