Presentation
2Our Introduction
- Jane Addams Team Members
- Julie Damore, John Locke, Christine Sykes Lowe,
David Plaisance and Tami Ruckman - Our Task
-
- To research and evaluate the status of youth
philanthropy initiatives in our community.
Based on this research, develop and implement a
sustainable plan to engage Buncombe County youth
in philanthropic work, preparing them to serve
our community in positive ways.
Jane Addams (September 6, 1860 May 21, 1935)
was a founder of the US Settlement House
movement, and one of the first American women to
be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931
3Our Vision
- Create a coalition of interested entities and
individuals, which can work toward promoting
youth and philanthropy in our area. - Youth will recognize the value of giving back as
springboard toward a lifetime of stewardship and
philanthropy. - Build youth self esteem and awareness, realizing
that any one person can make a difference,
regardless of age. - Identify a funding source or sources which can
support the initiative and, in an ideal scenario,
create long term sustainability.
4Our Process
- Meet twice monthly to discuss findings and make
decisions. This regular meeting time built a
trusting, team oriented approach. - Conduct background research on youth and
philanthropy see below. - We took a cross training approach to the team.
- Teleconferences with the youth serving
organization we ultimately chose to collaborate
with.
5Our Background Research
6Our Background Research (Continued)
- Possible stakeholder interviews held in early
November - Present were David Bailey, United Way The Ed
Brenegar Family, Community of Leadership
Meredith Stone-Switzer, Junior Achievement Bob
Wagner, The WNC Community Foundation Eric
Rowles, Leading to Change (via teleconference)
Gerry Goertz, Leadership Asheville Jane Addams
Team members. - The feasibility of attracting and keeping a cadre
of youth involved in a philanthropy project was
critical to the discussion. - Information generated included
- CFWNCs pilot grant program with youth (primarily
with children of foundation donors). - All schools have student councils are required to
adopt a service project during the year, for
example, MANNA Food bank. - Church Youth groups
- Shelby Brenegars Random Kids, in which she
fundraised support for victims of Hurricane
Katrina buy youth selling key chains.
7Our Background Research(Continued)
- The Leading to Change model (Eric Rowles) is
funded by Kellogg through 2009 and involves a
youth serving organization, a funder and Leading
to Change as the consultantsa sort of three
legged stool approach which has worked in other
parts of NC. - A sustainable component would be to develop a
partnership with a group/organization that
already works with youth. -
- Potential collaborators could be
- Junior Achievement, Asheville City Schools,
Buncombe County Schools, YMCA, YWCA, Leadership
Asheville, the WNC Community Foundation. - In addition we reviewed website information from
established youth philanthropy/leadership
programs.
8Summary Of Our Findings
- A conduit of youth interested in serving their
community is needed, probably via an existing
youth serving organization. -
- School hours are a much easier time to get youth
engaged. Inspiration must come from within the
student. - A reliable method of funding is needed.
- Training for the youth is needed to understand
community needs and the concept of philanthropy. - A sustainable, local entity is needed to
coordinate this effort.
9Our Decision
- After much deliberation, Team Jane Addams decided
to work closely with Junior Achievement to help
develop and expand the philanthropy component of
their JA Company Program.
10WNC Youth Philanthropy Project (WNCYPP) A
proposed partnership between JA and LA
- The Goal for the High School Student is
- To explore student led enterprise.
- To seek and evaluate local nonprofit grant
proposals and award funds to the selected 501 c 3
organizations. - To understand how to generate a profit through a
successful business model and in turn direct that
profit back into the community in a meaningful
way.
11The Plan
- JA staff member, business community volunteer,
teacher, student, and Leadership Asheville
volunteers will work together to complete the
project within the 10 week school term. - Participating students will learn how to create a
student led company. - Students
- will be challenged to earn 500 or more up to
3000, which will be matched by JA and given back
to a community organization in the form of a
grant. - will perform market research on their
product/services for sale. - will research community organizations, solicit
proposals, determine which one will be funded,
design an awards/check presentation ceremony and
grant monies, with assistance of Leadership
Asheville Fellows - will survey the student body regarding their
concerns/priorities.
12The Plan (Continued)
- Students will participate in a community forum,
coordinated by Leadership Asheville Fellows
volunteers. - JA will identify recruit and train all community
volunteers and classroom teachers on JA Company
Program materials and philanthropy curriculum
supplement. - Upon completion of course, JA will create and
distribute a press release to local media outlets
to raise awareness of WNCYPP and invite
attendance at the check presentation ceremony.
13The Plan (Continued)
- LA will assist JA with funding by identifying
potential funding sources. - LA will assist students with identification of
critical community needs by researching area non
profits, presenting a forum of community leaders
to educate and engage students, will assist the
students with grant proposal guidelines and will
assist students in evaluating grant proposals. - LA will visit the classroom and send
representative to check presentation ceremony.
14Status of 2009 JA/LA Collaboration
- This year the JA Company Program is at North
Buncombe HS, serving approximately 24 students.
Mark Upright, CEO of Eliada Home for Children is
the JA community volunteer teacher assigned to
this class. - The class created a company called Dream Team
Enterprise selling North Buncombe HS logo
lanyards. - The company created a Board of Directors with
officers, Human Resources, PR/Marketing and
Production departments.
15Recommendations
- We believe a more formalized approach needs to be
taken for success of this partnership, but there
is great potential given the desire by JA to
expand the philanthropic learning component. - We propose that Leadership Asheville Forum adopt
this project to ensure sustainability of the
partnership, along with providing LA Fellows with
a gratifying, yet manageable, way to make a
positive impact on youth in our community.
