Objectives
  • To provide an overview of the business of Nursery
    Management
  • To provide an overview of the methods used in
    nursery production
  • To provide an opportunity to think about
    horticultural practices
  • To provide an opportunity to write about
    horticultural practices

Format of Course
  • Lab (including 2 field trips)
  • 12 of grade (12 labs, 5 points each)
  • Lecture
  • 42 of grade (2 tests each test 100 points)
  • Paper
  • 29 of grade (papers 4 sections, 10 points
    each, 1 final paper 100 points)
  • Discussion
  • 17 of grade (8 written discussions, 10 points
    each)

  • Dont be late (lateness costs points)
  • Follow instructions carefully

Lecture
  • I expect you to be here
  • I dont take attendance
  • I dont provide lecture notes from lectures that
    you missed regardless of the reason
  • Tests are cumulative

Paper
  • One large paper comprised of four sections about
    a genus of plants grown in nurseries (hardy
    plants).
  • Each section is due by 400 pm on the due date
  • Each section should be at least 2 full pages long
  • Each section should include the references
    required (Be careful to cite properly)
  • Each section will be corrected by me.
    Corrections should be integrated into the final
    paper
  • Do Not Plagiarize
  • Plagiarism results in a 0 and a formal report to
    the College

  • Section 1 Detailed description of genus
  • General Information on plants in this genus
  • General morphological characteristics of genus
  • Where genus is found (native and introduced)
  • Why genus is used
  • What are some related genera
  • Any information on the history of mans
    involvement with this genus?
  • At least 5 references, 2 from scientific journals
  • Many of you will need to make decisions about how
    much information to include. Brief but thorough
    should be your motto.

  • How is the genus reproduced for market
  • Seed
  • Tissue Culture (Micropropagation)
  • Cuttings
  • Grafting
  • Etc.
  • At least 5 references, 2 from scientific journals

  • Anything else
  • At least 5 reference, 4 from scientific journals

  • Final Paper
  • Put all sections together, be sure to make
    appropriate corrections.

Discussions
  • Discussions occur every Friday.
  • Discussions investigate 2 sides of a variety of
    issues affecting the nursery industry.
  • Each discussion includes a paper at least 1 full
    page long that includes
  • A few paragraphs supporting one side
  • A few paragraphs supporting the opposing side
  • What you think is a reasonable compromise
  • Discussion papers are due AT THE BEGINNING OF
    CLASS. Lateness results in a reduced grade.
  • All Discussion must include at least 2 references
    which must be cited somewhere in the paper.
    References may come from the web.

For All Written Reports
  • Cite and Reference properly
  • Margins no greater that 1.25 inches on any side
    of the paper.
  • Double Space
  • Use 12 point font
  • When I say full pages I mean full pages.
  • Diagrams and pictures do not count towards total
    length of a paper.

General Stuff
  • Every day a project section is late takes 15
    percentage points off of the maximum earned
    grade. One day late means a maximum grade of B
    (85), two days late a maximum grade of C (70),
    three days late a maximum grade of F (55)
