Introduction

• Cunard decided to build a new ship 30 years after
  they built Queen Elizabeth 2
• Cunard wanted to change the cruising experience
  by adding IT
• This was a new concept for the cruise industry
• Ideas included Smart card, interactive TVs, and
  AVO system

Challenges

• First time a major IT project was put into a
  cruise ship
• Building location not where ship was located
• When installing in France no working elevators,
  problems with cable drop locations, power outs,
  and their keys would not work
• Educating the staff
• They dont understand that the reason they cant
  key in anything in lower case is because they
  have the CAPS lock on.

SDLC Current State Analysis

• Process of determining a new system by
  understanding the current system.
• Business Process Reengineering (BPR)
• We had a beautiful plan. Within two minutes, it
  went in the bin. Frank Finch, Head of the
  Infrastructure Project.
• New system was designed to make all the luxuries
  of the QM2 easily accessible to its guests.

SDLC Application Design

• Software needed to support the new system.
• 3 separate data control centers that are all
  designed to back each other up.
• The Property Management System handles crew
  information along with onboard billing.
• Wireless access points
• Three replicated databases to make sure the
  communication system remains operational
• PBX
• TVs
• POS

SDLC Application Development

• The system was tested in Miami at a deployment
  center before being disassembled, packaged, and
  sent to France.
• 3 months to install onto the ship.
• Tested with real data.

SDLC Implementation

• Staff training on all the new integrated systems.
• For those questions that the stewards and
  stewardesses could not answer, the ship has three
  computer support officers onboard at all times.
• Accepted by users.
