2Identifying Genuine U.S. Money
- A genuine portrait appears lifelike and stands
out distinctly from the fine screen-like
background.
- On a genuine bill, the saw-tooth points of the
Federal Reserve and Treasury seals are clear,
distinct, and sharp.
- Genuine serial numbers have a distinctive style
and are evenly spaced. They are printed in the
same ink color as the Treasury seal.
- The fine lines in the border of a genuine bill
are clear and unbroken.
- Genuine paper contains no watermarks. It has
tiny red and blue fibers embedded throughout.
3Identifying Counterfeit Money
- The counterfeit portrait is usually lifeless and
flat. Details merge into the background which is
often dark or mottled.
- The counterfeit seals may have uneven, blunt, or
broken saw-tooth points.
- On a counterfeit, the serial numbers may differ
in color or shade of ink from the Treasury seal.
The numbers may not be uniformly spaced or
aligned.
- On the counterfeit, the lines in the outer margin
and scrollwork may be blurred and indistinct.
- Often counterfeiters try to simulate these fibers
by printing tiny red and blue lines on their
paper.

6New Design For Your Money
Portrait
The enlarged portrait is easy to recognize, while
the added detail is harder to duplicate. The
portrait is now off-center, providing room for a
watermark and reducing wear and tear on the
portrait.
Security Thread
A polymer thread is embedded vertically in the
paper and indicates the denomination. The
words USA __ and a flag can be seen from both
sides of the note when held up to a bright light.
Additionally, the thread glows yellow when held
under an ultraviolet light.
Watermark
A watermark identical to the portrait is visible
from both sides when held up to a light.
Federal Reserve Indicators
A new universal seal represents the entire
Federal Reserve System. A letter and number
beneath the left serial number identifies the
issuing Federal Reserve Bank.
