is for business.
B
Business is the word we use when people,
communities or countries exchange goods and
services. Colorado Springs sells many goods
including food, clothing, housing,
transportation, and many more. Services provided
for our community include police and fire
protection, restaurants, hotels, entertainment,
and other services tourist, or visitors to our
community might need.
4
is for community, city, country, and continent.
C
1. Colorado Springs has many communities. 2.
Colorado Springs is located in El Paso
County. 3. Colorado is one of the fifty states
in the United States. 4. The United States is a
country in the continent of North America.
5
is for Denver, Colorado.
D
Denver is the Capitol city of Colorado. The
Capitol building has a beautiful, gold dome on
top. Government officials from all over the state
come to the Capitol building for important
meetings. They discuss laws that will make life
better for the people living in Colorado.

6
is for economy.
E
Economy is a word that describes how healthy
businesses are. If new jobs are being created and
wages or salaries are high, the economy is
strong. If many people in a region are
unemployed and wages are low, we say the economy
is weak, poor or bad.
7
is for the flag of Colorado.
F
In the flag of Colorado, the gold circle
representssunshine. Twoblue stripes represent
theclear blue skies.
The white stripe represents the snow capped
mountains of the state, and red represents the
color of much of the state's soil.
8
is for geography.
G
The Rocky Mountain range of mountains stretches
from Alaska to Mexico. Colorado has the highest
peaks in the Rocky Mountain range. The
Continental Divide runs through the Colorado
Rockies.
Rivers and streams on the east side of the
Continental Divide flow toward the Atlantic
Ocean. The rivers and streams on the west of the
Divide flow toward the Pacific Ocean.
9
is for history of Pikes Peak Region.
H
We can learn about the history of our region by
looking at old buildings, by reading about early
pioneers, and by looking at artifacts from
different periods in time. The history of our
region is all around us. We can see streets,
buildings and historic places named after famous
pioneers.
10
is for interdependence.
I
People in teams are interdependent because they
all need each other. Interdependence means
sharing and working together with people, other
countries, states or regions. How are these
swimmers interdependent upon each other?
11
is for judge.
J
A judge is elected by the people in a community.
Judges work in courtrooms. They listen to both
sides of arguments. Then they decide the best way
to end the argument legally. They make sure
everyone gets a fair trial if they are accused of
a crime.
12
is for Katharine Lee Bates
K
Katharine Lee Bates is a famous poet. Look at
this primary source original poem of America the
Beautiful written in Mrs. Bates own handwriting.
She wrote the poem in 1893 after visiting
Colorado Springs and traveling to the top of
Pikes Peak. The site was so beautiful, she wrote
a famous poem about it.
13
is for local government.
L
Every local government has three parts, or
branches. The executive branch includes the
Mayor. The legislativebranch includes members of
City Council.
The judicial branch includes the judges and
people that work for the courts. The Mayor and
City Council have offices in this building,
Colorado Springs City Hall.
14
is for mayor.
M
Lionel Rivera is the Mayor of Colorado Springs.
The Mayor is the executive branch of local
government. He works with City Council Members in
the legislative branch. He also works with judges
that represent the judicial branch of local
government. All of these people are elected by
citizens in Colorado Springs.
15
is for natural resources.
N
Colorado's magnificent mountains are its greatest
natural resource. Much more than a tourist
attraction, they are rich in minerals, with over
200 useful varieties of minerals found in the
Rockies and on the plateau to the west.
16
is for opportunity.
O
One reason many pioneers moved to the Pikes Peak
Region was for economic opportunity. Some built
travel resorts, others panned for gold, and some
came to the high altitude looking for a healthier
life.
Colorado is still a land of opportunity for
education, jobs, and tourism.
17
is for Pioneer Museum
P
In the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum, visitors
will find primary and secondary sources of
history. Primary sources are what historians use
to learn about the past. They are documents or

years later by someone that did not witness the
event.

T
The city of Colorado Springs began in 1879 when
William Palmer bought 10,000 acres of land by Old
Colorado City and named it Colorado Springs.
Another word for timeline is chronology, meaning
the study of time. There are many traditions
passed down from generation to generation here in
our community. The Pikes Peak Auto Race is a
tradition that began in 1916 and takes place
every year.
22
is for Ute Indians.
U
The Ute Indians lived across much of the northern
Colorado Plateau beginning at least 2000 years
ago. The name Ute, means "high land" or "land
of the sun." The Ute Indians were
mountain-dwellers and some roamed the land living
in tents.
23
is for voting.
V
Voting gives every American citizen a voice in
who their leaders will be. Voters also get to
cast their votes on major issues about their
community. They can decide which projects will
receive money and support from their taxes. This
man is voting at a private voting station. Voting
is a right and a responsibility of every citizen.

great community. Police officers and fire
fighters protect us.
City Council members work to make our city
cleaner and safer in order to attract new
businesses to Colorado Springs.
27
is for Zebulon Pike.
Z
Zebulon Pike 's claim to history is the discovery
of the peak in Colorado that bears his name Pikes
Peak.  Zebulon Pike never reached the summit but
in those days just finding the mountain was
enough. He returned to the U.S. with maps and
information about Americas western frontier.
