A portfolio is a visual presentation of your
skills, abilities, achievements and goals. We all
have many talents and skills, experiences and
achievements that can be presented to give others
a more comprehensive understanding of your
potential.
Begin with your coversomething that makes a
statement about youor design a formal cover.
Employers and college representatives would
probably be impressed.
2Begin to build your portfolio by focusing on the
following steps.
- Develop or review your five-year educational
and career plan your school-to-work development
plan.
- Decide how you are going to organize your
portfolio.
- Decide what and how you want to document your
accomplishments.
- You will eventually highlight your
accomplishments in your resume.

Academic skills are the skills that help you
prepare for future training and education. They
include communicating, planning, understanding,
and problem solving.

If youre in a vocational-technical program, you
could list skills youve completed, or you could
pass in photographs of your projects or high-tech
equipment you can use.

Try to include some of the awards you have
received. Even if you received them in
elementary school, they are still good ways to
validate your accomplishments. Ask your parents
or guardians for information on your past
activities.
11Teamwork Examples
Include examples of teamwork. You can use
sports, clubs, student government, class
projects, or group activities outside of school.
Band chorus, yearbook, and noteworthy projects
are examples.
12Grades and Test Scores
You may want to include results from tests you
have taken. You could use local, state, or
national exam results. You can use your high
school transcript.

Hobbies and other outside interests demonstrate
your accomplishments too! Volunteer activities
should be included.
