2
Introduction
  • The internet is providing a medium for the
proliferation and spread of hate and
    discrimination.
  • Long established groups have found a way to reach
out to a new and larger audience. This format
allows groups to entertain and present material
    in a less threatening manner.

3
Continued
  • We will discuss the concepts of Hate, Hate
crimes, racism and their link to Hate groups.
  • Legal ramifications The Hate Crimes Prevention
Act (1998), and concerns over free speech
    infringement.
  • The KKK, American Nazi Party and Euro- David
Dukes organization are three examples we will
    cover.

4
KKK-Websitewww.KKK.com
  • The KKK website uses Christian fundamentalist
doctrine to attempt to legitimatize its
    separatist beliefs.
  • The website also seeks out confused adolescents
    with a message of belonging.
  • The website ultimate goal is to degrade any and
all races and religions other than white
    Christians.

KKK-Cont.http//www.kkk.com/index1.htm
The KKK believe they are not discriminating
against other groups, only promoting their own.

Proclaiming a Message of hope and deliverance for
White Christian America ! If my people which are
called by my name will humble themselves and pray
and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways
Then I hear from heaven, will forgive their sins
and will heal their land Chronicles 714

Our uncompromising name and principles weed out
cowards and hypocrites, and elicit a high level
of dedication and activity on the part of
Klansmen and Klanswomen nationwide.

  • American Nazi Party Monograph
  • The monograph is a summary and conclusions of the
    American Nazi party and/or GeorgeLincoln
Rockwell. Rockwell's aim was to be Governor of
Virginia by 1966 and President of the United
States by 1972. Once he obtained the Presidency,
his plans were to eliminate all "treasonous Jews,
through methods used by Hitler's Nazis, banish
all American Negroes to Africa and amend the
Constitution of the United States to conform to
    Nazi whims."

  • Preserving America's Cultural HeritageEURO works
to protect American and Southern heritage against
those who seek to destroy it
  • EURO is increasing public awareness and
understanding of issues vital to the rights and
    well being of European-Americans, including
racial discrimination against us, busing and
    forced integration, runaway welfare, and
    immigration.

1 Identity groups believe that white Europeans,
not Jews, are the real Biblical "Chosen People,"
that Jews are the children of Satan, that the
white race is inherently superior to others and
that Blacks and other non-whites are "mud people"
without a soul.

Definitions
  • Hate-To have great aversion to, with a strong
desire that evil should befall the person toward
whom the feeling is directed to dislike
intensely to detest as to hate ones
    enemies.(Webster's dictionary).
  • Racism-is an ideology, or belief system designed
to justify or rationalize the unequal treatment
of members of socially designed racial groups
    (Simon Henderson).

10
  • The FBI defines a hate crime as A criminal
offense committed against the person or property
which is motivated, in whole or in part, by the
offenders bias against race, religion, sexual
    orientation group, or ethnicity/nation origin.

11
Every hour ...someone commits a hate crime.
  • Every day ... at least eight blacks, three
whites, three gays, three Jews and one Latino
    become hate crime victims.
  • Every week ...a cross is burned.

12
  • Bias is a human condition, and American history
is rife with prejudice against groups and
individuals because of their race, religion,
    disability, sexual orientation or other
    differences.
  • The 20th Century saw major progress in outlawing
discrimination, and most Americans today support
    integrated schools and neighborhoods. But
stereotypes and unequal treatment persist, an
atmosphere often exploited by hate groups.
  • Spread on the Internet and accessible by
personal computers, hate clearly knows no
    geographic bounds
  • .

13
Tolerance.org
  • The wonder of the Internet has been tarnished
by hundreds of Web sites that spew hate. Using
the Net, hatemongers can now reach into the room
of any child who has a home computer. Their sites
are often deceptive. Many attempt to disguise
their message under a veneer of respectability.
They use manipulation and lies to make their
    ideas sound almost reasonable.

14
ACTIVE U.S. HATE GROUPS IN 2002The Southern
Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project counted
708 active hate groups in the United States in
2002. View our criteria. The Center lists only
organizations and their chapters known to be
active during 2002.

Conclusion
  • Hate groups have been around for many years. The
internet is providing these groups more
opportunity for recruitment. It is easier to
reach masses of people on-line than attempting to
    do so in person.
  • They can not be stopped because their first
amendment right allows them freedom of speech.

16
  • Caution should be taken to ensure they do not
reach our children, without our being aware.
They are often well disguised as promoting
equality of all people. Hopefully, one day
people will no longer find the need and desire to
    hate.
