Title: OUR 50 STATES

1
OUR 50 STATES
  • State Kentucky
  • Created By Ashley
  • September 7, 2006

2
STATE NICKNAME
  • Blue grass isnt really blue. Its green, but in
spring blue grass produces bluish-purple buds,
that when seen in large fields the grass looks
blue instead of green. When the pioneers seen it
they wanted it. So the name bluegrass is stuck
and that is how we got our name.

3
STATE HISTORY
  • In 1750 Thomas Walker, a pioneer scout, entered
Kentucky through the Cumberland gap, and made the
first thorough exploration of the Eastern part of
    Kentucky. Daniel Boone explored Eastern
Kentucky in 1767. He came to Kentucky again in
1769 and spent two years in the bluegrass region.
  • As for the Western part of Kentucky, as long as
1,200 years ago Indians probably lived in the
forests of western Kentucky. Early white ex
plorers found many different tribes in Kentucky.
    These tribes included Cherokee, Delaware,
    Iroquois, and Shawnee.

4
SYMBOLS OF KENTUCKY
  • The state bird is the Cardinal.
  • The state flower is the Golden Rod.
  • The state tree is the Tulip-Poplar.

5
PLACES TO VISIT
  • Places to visit are
  • Mammoth Cave. This is the worlds longest cave
system, with more than 365 miles explored.
  • Cumberland Falls. (Known as Niagra of the South)
It is the only water fall in north America that
has a moon bow (rainbow at night.)

6
ECONOMY
  • The equine (horse) industry is 1 in agriculture
in Kentucky. We have a common wealth of
thoroughbreds, 33,000 quarter horses, and more
than 100 annual horse shows that draw visitors
    from all over the world.

7
STATEHOOD
  • Kentucky became the 15th state in the U.S. on
June 1, 1792. Unlike many other states, Kentucky
was not a territory prior to becoming an
    individually recognized state. It previously
    comprised a portion of Virginia.

8
STATE MOTTO
  • Kentuckys motto is Of course United we stand,
Divided we fall. But we also have another one
Let us be grateful to God.
