Title: What a waste

1
What a waste!
  • Ian Fehring

2
Some background info
  • The U.S. consumes more energy than any other
    country in the world!
  • We are lazy
  • Drive when we could walk
  • Do other unnecessary things to waste energy

3
Energy?
  • Energy has a variety of ways to be measured
  • Joules (J) - mechanical
  • Work (W) - mechanical
  • Watts (w) electrical
  • Volts (V) electrical
  • Calorie (C) heat
  • British Thermal Unit (BTU) - heat

4
BTU?
  • 1BTU the amount of energy need to raise 1lb of
    water 1F
  • Standard unit used in ordinary commerce.

5
BTUs in Fuel
  • 1 gallon of fuel oil 145,000 BTUs
  • 1 ft3 of gas 1,031 BTUs
  • 1 Kilowatt hour of electricity 3,412 BTUs
  • 1 ton of coal 25,000,000 BTUs
  • 1 cord (128 ft3) of wood 20,000,000 BTUs
  • 1 gallon of gas 125,000 BTUs

6
More Background Info
  • Americans on average throw away 4.4 lbs of trash
    a day.
  • In urban environments, we average 7.3 lbs of
    trash a day per person.
  • The United States throws out 250 million tons of
    trash a year.
  • ? A lot of this is toxic as well!
  • and all this trash has to go somewhere.

7
Where does all the trash go?
8
What is considered toxic?
  • paints and stains
  • pool and spa chemicals
  • pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and poisons
  • motor oil, antifreeze and other automotive fluids
  • thinners and solvents
  • household cleaners and disinfectants
  • batteries
  • art and hobby chemicals
  • aerosol spray products
  • sharps (medical syringes)
  • propane tanks or bottles from barbecue grills
  • ? A lot of stuff we throw away everyday!

9
How does this relate to a college student?
  • For my project I examined 3 days of my life and
    recorded info regarding
  • All the energy I used
  • Transportation
  • Electrical appliances
  • Did calculations on heat loss, water loss and
    electrical waste.
  • All the trash I threw away
  • Measured it in lbs

10
Transportation for 3 days
  • Foot
  • Total 22 miles
  • 4.5 was necessary
  • 16.5 was for exercise
  • Car 31 miles
  • Bike 0
  • Train 0
  • Plane 0

11
31 miles in the Car
  • Volvo 240 gets 21mpg city driving
  • I used 1.48 gallons of gas
  • 184,523.9 BTUs!
  • While I paid 2.02 for a gallon I spent 2.99!

12
Electrical Appliances used over 3 Days
Does not include cooking I eat at Kosters or
go out for every meal! Does not include
lighting
13
138.506 KWh?
  • Electricity is 0.08/KWh
  • I spent 11.08
  • And used 472,582.472 BTUs!
  • ? I dont even cook!

14
Heating and Air Conditioning
  • The size and of panes in a window can make a
    big difference in the
  • Efficiency of retaining heat
  • Amount of energy lost to the environment

15
My Window
  • 2x3 SA 6ft2
  • Single pane glass (R 0.9)
  • Inside Temp 71F
  • Outside Temp 52F
  • ? I lose 126.67 BTUs/year to the environment
    because of 1 window!

16
of window panes is significant
  • My window is single paned (R0.9) ? 126.67
    BTUs/yr lost.
  • If double paned (R1.85) ? 61.62 BTUs/yr lost.
  • If triple paned (R2.8) ? 40.71 BTUs/yr lost.

17
Water leak problem
  • If water drips from the sink at one drip/sec
  • In 15 min. 2.1lbs of water was collected
  • Thats 73,584 gallons of water/year
  • And 5,886,720 BTUs lost to heat the water
  • And 405.98 gallons of oil fuel needed to heat the
    water lost!
  • ? oil fuel is 1.30/gallon
  • thats 527.77 a year for a drip!

18
Lighting
  • 40-watt incandescent light bulb
  • Light meter reading 4.72
  • 40-watt fluorescent light
  • Light meter reading 16.85
  • ? Fluorescent lighting is 72 more efficient than
    incandescent lighting!

19
My 3 day Trash Inventory
  • Collected items included
  • Paper products
  • Glass (primarily beer bottles)
  • Metal (primarily beer cans)
  • Plastics
  • Total weight 24.5 lbs
  • ? 8.16 lbs/day!

Nothing was recycled it all went to the dump.
20
24.5 lbs of Trash?
  • Beer bottles were mainly responsible for the
    weight.
  • Most of this trash could have been recycled!
  • There are not adequate recycling bins on campus
to dispose of this waste correctly.

21
Conclusions
  • I wasted 726,092.86 BTUs in three days
  • 5.809 gallons of gas
  • It cost 20.25!
  • I am a lazy, wasteful American!
  • I dont recycle
  • I am not efficient with electricity
  • My heat is up too high
  • Id rather drive instead of walk
  • ? But its so much fun!
