Serve defined
  • Serve is used to put the ball in play. The only
    time in the match that the athlete has total
    control of the ball.

  • Develop toss consistency
  • Execute skill with MINIMUM body movement
  • Contact high and in front of the body

  • Pre contact position
  • The contact position
  • Follow through position

Pre contact position
  • Opposite foot forward
  • Right handed, left foot is forward
  • Front leg is flexed and weight on back leg only
  • Ball arm bent at elbow
  • ball is in front of hitting arms shoulder
  • Hitting arm drawn back in a bow and arrow
  • Elbow kept high and away from body
  • Hitting hand wrist is straight, flat, and rigid

The contact position
  • Elbow high and away from body
  • Wrist hand firm contact on lower 2/3 of hand
  • Create float on ball
  • Off center or wrist snap will put spin on ball
  • Elbow leads serving motion
  • Then forearm extension
  • Elbow at contact
  • high and in line with the hitting shoulder

Follow through position
  • Straight line behind the balls path
  • Beginners contact and freeze
  • Contact ball and arm continue downward toward
    players thigh

  • Floater serve
  • Top spin serve
  • Jump serve

Floater serve
  • Ball floats and moves in air
  • Not a lot of power on serve
  • Movement makes difficult to track ball
  • Float created by no follow through
  • Contact and freeze
  • Very effective serve
  • Contact with palm only

Top Spin serve
  • Spin created by snapping over ball
  • Crosses net and dies
  • Usually lots of power on serve
  • Difficult to pass because of ball dieing after
    crossing net
  • Contact with palm then fingers

Jump serve
  • Attack approach with serving
  • High error serve
  • Very effective once mastered
  • Timing and ball toss are most crucial elements
  • Can be floater or top spin
  • Contact will depend on type of serve given top
    spinsnap over floatfreeze

  • Most crucial aspect
  • Toss vertically
  • Ball should land in front of servers hitting
    shoulder
  • Bad toss serving error
  • Have athletes master toss first
  • TIME to serve

Short serve
  • Athletes should master the short serve
  • Ideally 10 line is good short serve
  • Slow down arm speed
