Title: GROSS MOTOR WORKSHOP

1
GROSS MOTOR WORKSHOP
  • Senior Freshman
  • Sandra Patton

2
Gross motor skills
  • Refers to coordinating large body movements in
    games sports

3
Assessment of gross motor skills
  • Standardized assessments focus on
  • Ball skills
  • Balance
  • E.g. Bruinninks Ostertsky Movement ABC

4
Balance
  • Static balance refers to the ability to stabilize
body in a balanced position, e.g. standing on one
    leg
  • Dynamic balance refers to maintaining balance
    while moving, e.g. Hopskotch

5
Foundations of movement
  • All movement is dependent on
  • accurate sensory processing ( proprioceptive,
vestibular , tactile, visual etc), this helps
    build body awareness postural control
  • Mechanical features
  • Praxic abilities
  • With practice children develop increasingly more
    complex movements skills

6
SENSORY PROCESSING/INTEGRATION
  • The information received from the
proprioceptive sense ( muscles joints) the
vestibular sense ( balance), the visual
auditory sense and tactile system helps develop
body awareness and to build motor maps in
memory, so that with practice motor actions
become automatic and we can learn new motor
    skills as we grow.

7
MECHANICAL/PHYSICAL FEATURES
  • Physical capabilities of the child disability
    may impact on this
  • Strength
  • Range of movement can be limited
  • Muscle tone too high too low
  • Joint stability e.g if poor joint stability in
shoulders, difficult to accurately control fine
    finger movements

8
PRAXIS
  • Praxis is the ability to plan and sequence
    unfamiliar motor actions
  • Components of praxis
  • Ideation
  • Motor planning
  • Execution Feedback
  • Elements of praxis
  • Timing sequencing, grading, Bilateral
    integration

9
Bilateral Integration
  • This refers to being able to use the two sides of
    body together in activities.
  • Tasks that involve the body in doing different
tasks are more difficult than when body doing the
    same task.
  • Examples, Jumping two feet together is easier
    than alternating movement, e.g. skipping

10
Sequencing Grading
  • A lot of sports/ games involve the ability to
sequence a number of movements and timing of the
sequence can be very important to success, e.g.
    racket games
  • This refers to the fine tuning needed to perform
fluid movements comes with refinement of skills

11
Activities
  • Pogo hopper
  • Play catch game
  • Bat balloon/shuttle
  • Skipping
  • Football between objects

12
TASK
  • Observe a person carrying out the task.
  • What skills does this involve?
  • What age of child is the activity suitable for?
  • How could you grade the difficulty of the task?
