Title: The Sea of Sand
1The Sea of Sand
Mrs. Becks Class
2Climate
- Food and water are in short supply in the
desert. Some deserts literally are seas of sand.
Temperatures can jump wildly over 100 degrees
Fahrenheit. Because there is little moisture and
cloud cover it gets very cold at night. Less than
ten inches of rain may fall in a desert each
year, but a down pour may follow a year-long
drought.

- Bobcats are found in almost every habitat.
These cats range from about 15 to 20 pounds. The
Bobcat is quite fierce and is able to attack and
kill animals as large as deer, however food habit
studies have shown Bobcats subsist on a diet of
Rabbits, Ground Squirrels , Mice, Pocket Gophers
and Wood Rats. - Javelinas mating season year round. Javelinas
with their tail, range from about 40 to 60 inches
long. A Javelinas typical diet includes agaves
and Prickly Pear Cactus. Javelinas shoulder
height 20 to 24 inches tall and their average
lifespan is about 10 years.
4Animals pg.2
- Jack Rabbits are usually18 to 25 inches long
and have large brown ears with black tips. Jack
Rabbits are vegetarians and eat a great variety
of herbs and shrubs. - An estimated two million Jack Rabbits are
hunted in California yearly.
5Plants pg. 1
The Saguaro Cactus grows very slowly- perhaps
an inch a year-but this plant can grow to be 50
feet tall. An average old saguaro would have 5
arms and be about 30 feet tall.
The Joshua Tree grows in the Mojave Desert. This
tree is a large desert plant with spiky leaves.
It also has a fruit which is food for desert
animals.
6Plants pg. 2
Many desert plants store water in their tissue
such as the Prickly Pear Cactus. Animals will
eat them for their Liquid. Their thorns keep them
safe from any predators.
