  size of Pennsylvania lost every year.
• The United States throws away 180 million tons of
  garbage each year. Thats enough to bury 27,000
  football fields in a layer of garbage 10 feet
  deep

• By Recycling 1 ton of paper you save 17 trees
  6953 gallons of water 463 gallons of oil
  587 pounds of air pollution 3.06 cubic yards
  of landfill space 4077 Kilowatt hours of
  energy
• If all morning newspapers read around the country
  were recycled, 41,000 trees would be saved daily
  and 6 million tons of waste would never end up in
  landfills
• Every year nearly 900,000,000 trees are cut down
  to provide raw materials for American paper and
  pulp mills.

• Every day Americans use enough steel and tin cans
  to make a steel pipe running from Los Angeles to
  New York... and back.
• Americans throw away enough steel every year to
  build all the new cars made in America.
• In 1989, enough scrap copper was recycled in the
  U.S. to supply the wiring and plumbing for every
  building constructed already that year.
• The steel industry recycles nearly 19 billion
  steel cans each year into new products, about 600
  cans recycled every second.

• Glass never wears out -- it can be recycled
  forever. We save over a ton of resources for
  every ton of glass recycled --
• If all the glass bottles and jars collected
  through recycling in the U.S. in 1994 were laid
  end to end, they'd reach the moon and half way
  back to earth.

• Custodian moves large containers from hallway
  outside so that Dependable Sanitation can pick up
