  • Communicate your skillset.
  • Illustrate your fit with the organization.
  • Demonstrate positive personality traits.
  • Generate interest in you on a social level.
  • Open doors for storytelling in the interview.
  • Communicate your storyhow you came to this
    point.

Telling Your Story
  • The Laundry List Approach
  • Write down everything you have done from your
    professional experiences
  • Go through each experience and pull out
  • Skills used
  • Accomplishments/impact/RESULTS (quantify when
    possible)
  • Pick best experiences (those that demonstrate use
    of the previous listed skills).
  • Use buzzwords where applicable -- but sparingly.

The Resume Template
  • After you identify the information you want to
    include in your resume, determine the order.
  • Use CDO instruction sheet to create your resume.
  • Make your resume no more than one page!

Technical Tips
  • Degree Candidate for Masters degree in
    Business Administration (MBA), 2003. or
    Candidate for Master of Business Administration
    (MBA), 2003.
  • Focus in not Concentration in.
  • Latin and Greek phrases italicized (e.g. pro
    bono)
  • Journal titles italicized Book titles
    underlined.
  • Computers no need to list basic programs.
  • International students show adopted names Min
    (Charles) Liu.

More Tips
  • Punctuation
  • Bullet points, text sentences, and degrees are
    followed by a period.
  • No period for locations of jobs/ positions, e.g.
    GE Investments Stamford, Connecticut
  • Numbers
  • Thousand 500,000 or 500K
  • Million 1,000,000 or 1M
  • Millions 1,100,000 or 1.1MM
  • Billions 5,000,000 or 5B

Resume Review
  • Check your resume for spelling errors. Spelling
    errors will kill any chances you have.
  • Go through each bullet point and ask yourself,
    What does this communicate to my potential
    employer?
  • Keep sentences short shorten where you can.
  • Get rid of any passive sentences! Use action
    words to begin sentences. Vary your word usage.

Resume Review
  • Check resume for visual appealhave some white
    space.
  • Avoid widowsone word on a line.
  • Be careful using jargon from a field or company
    other than the one you are targeting.
  • For ideas, you can review old resumes (these can
    be found on the CDO web site at CDP Marketing
    Yourself).

Fine Tuning
  • Get your friends to look at your resume. If
    English is not your first language, be sure to
    have a native English speaker review it.
  • Have your CDO Career Advisor OR other second
    years review your resume.
  • Talk to your Writing Consultant. Make an
    appointment during office hours.
  • Also, you may consult SOMs Tutor-in-Writing,
    Deborah Tenney and her Student Writing
    Assistants  
  • will help you with all writing needs cover
    letters, resumes, course work, business plans
  • holds office hours in

DO NOT CARPET BOMB!!!
  • Sending the same version of your resume/cover
    letter to many people simultaneously for review.
  • This is very ineffective and inefficient.
  • This practice is strongly frowned upon.
  • Show your document to one person and incorporate
    the recommended changes before passing it along
    to someone else for review.

Your Writing Consultant
  • Office Hours posted in the CDO, starting Monday,
    23 September.
  • Email your resume at least 24 hours in advance of
    your appointment.
  • Your consultant will review your resume without
    an appointment. Be sure to allow at least 48
    hours for a response.
  • Email insert
  • Resume Book Deadlines
  • First Draft September 27
  • Final October 4
  • PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
