Campus Network Structure
10
Technology Support for Learning and Teaching
  • Large lecture halls - what technology should be
    there?
  • Small classrooms - network connectivity
  • Labs versus collaborative work spaces
  • Do we need labs?

11
  • What is the role of video in teaching and
    learning?
  • How about virtual learning worlds?
  • How will we build and support information
    repositories?
  • Can we support students well who dont live in
    the residence halls?
  • What kind of technology will students bring to
    campus?

12
Technology Infrastructure
  • Its a utility - always there - always on
  • Hardware environment
  • Software environment
  • Shared services - such as mail, calendar, print
    services, file services
  • Identification, authentication, authorization

13
  • The grid environment for researchers (and for
    others)
  • End user access for administrative systems
  • The desktop challenge - here is where we
encounter the bleeding edge, folks we leave
    behind
  • And what about those little things - hand held
    devices?

14
  • And the tough issue of what is distributed and
what is central. The challenge increases to
address this in a meaningful way as financial
constraints as well as security constraints
    increase.

15
Security
  • Physical security for network and servers -
    closets, machine rooms
  • Security of data
  • That HIPAA, FERPA, SEVIS, USA Patriot Act stuff
  • Hackers and viruses
  • Physical, technical and policy considerations

16
Disaster Prevention Recovery
  • Backup in Peterson Building machine room
  • Remote management (ongoing)
  • Storage systems (ongoing)
  • How do we plan for Peterson Building going away?
  • Backup power for machine rooms
  • Disaster recovery program
  • Technology only? Or, also user recovery?

17
Space
  • DoIT leases space in Research Park
  • DoIT has folks in store front space on University
    Avenue
  • We need to do some longer term space planning and
find shorter term better solutions for the
Research Park folks - and maybe the University
    Avenue folks.

18
In Summary
  • IT has become pervasive and foundational
  • Capabilities and services are taken for granted
  • And the technology baseline is changing all the
    time

19
How this relates to the capital plan
  • Fiber and cabling
  • Ample single mode fiber runs to current buildings
    and all new buildings
  • Appropriate vertical and horizontal runways in
new buildings - and upgrades in existing
    buildings
  • Adoption of category 6 cabling standard for new
    and replacement building networks

20
  • Standards for telecommunications rooms
  • Size
  • Quantity
  • Electricity
  • HVAC
  • Not shared
  • Secured
  • Renovations necessary in many places on campus

21
  • Computer Rooms
  • Is it time to ask if we should consolidate rooms
to avoid duplicating facilities - and to ensure
    security, redundancy, back-up?
  • Minimally, we need to develop and adopt standards
    for some facilities including security.
  • Teaching and Learning Spaces
  • Time to initiate a planning process with faculty
about teaching and learning space needs and how
they mesh with the capital plan
  • The wired vs wireless question will come to the
ITC for review again in the early fall

22
  • DoIT works with the ITC and the new NTF (network
task force) to establish guidelines and standards
  • DoIT works with FPM to gain adoption of the
    guidelines and standards

23
  • Can technology considerations be more integrated
in the capital planning process? How can we do
that? (And technology considerations are often a
    moving target).
  • Can technology leaders be included in the capital
planning process to raise key issues and
questions? (eg Peterson Building is a core
network node. We need to plan for relocation).

24
Regardless
  • We need a new and different kind of technology
    plan - a campus plan
  • And we need to maintain maximum flexibility in
    that plan
  • So - the next step is to initiate a campus
    technology planning process.

25
Thanks for inviting me!
  • You have pushed me to face the need for that
    campus plan
