Spanish Dialectology

• The diversity of Spanish dialects largely stems
  from spread of Castilian Spanish to Andalucia,
  and then to the New World.
• Since Cádiz was the major port to the New World,
  it is a particularly appropriate place to study
  Spanish dialectology

Andalusian Language

• Prestige dialect of Vulgar Latin spoken in
  Baetica (emperor Trajan from Baetica 98 AD)
• Moorish invasion brought Arabic and Berber
  languages to Andalucia coexisted with the local
  Vulgar Latin (Mozarabe)
• Non-prestige dialect spoken in Northern provinces
  (Castilla)

The Spread of Castillano

• With the reconquest, Arabic and Mozarabe was
  replaced by Castellano
• The accent that ensued is the source of a major
  dialect division in Modern Spanish

• Flamenco is an art form that emerged in the late
  18th century in Lower Andalucia
• Often associated with Gitanos (Spanish Roma)
• All of the early artists came from the province
  of Cádiz (including Jerez de la Frontera)

  structured oral tradition in the singing,
  guitar, and dance
