Qué es el subjuntivo?
Hoy vamos a aprender el uso del presente del
subjuntivo en clásulas nominales. In other
words, today we are going to learn how to form
the subjunctive and when to use it in noun
clauses!
3
El Subjuntivo
The subjunctive is often difficult for students
to understand, so I will explain it in English
first and then we will practice using it in
Spanish.
Think of the subjunctive as a mood rather than a
tense. Tense is associated with when an action
occurs (past, present, future), while mood is a
reflection of how the speaker feels about the
action. We dont often use the subjunctive in
English, but it is frequently used in Spanish.

    Subjunctive she be
  • My dad insists that I get good grades in all my
    classes. Subjunctive I get
  • We dont believe that it will snow tomorrow.
  • Subjunctive it will snow

6
Repaso
  • Hasta ahora hemos usado el modo indicativo para
    forma los verbos.
  • Usamos el indicativo para un evento conocido o
cuando la persona que habla no tiene duda.
  • El subjuntivo es un poco más complicado. Por
eso, voy a enseñar en Inglés.

7
Guidelines
  • There are specific moods associated with using
    the subjunctive.
  • Many times sentences that express doubt,
    uncertainty, denial, desire, commands or
reactions require the use of the subjunctive
  • These sentences will have two clauses, an
independent and a dependent clause. If the
    independent clause expresses doubt, uncertainty,
denial, desire, a command, or reaction then the
dependent clause will take the subjunctive.
  • If you understand this information continue to
the next slide, if you need review of clauses

Using the Subjunctive in Noun Clauses
  • THREE CONDITIONS REQUIRED TO USE THE SUBJUNCTIVE
    IN NOUN CLAUSES
  • 1) The sentence must contain a main clause and a
    subordinate clause.
  • 2) The main clause and subordinate clause must
    have DIFFERENT subjects.
  • 3) The main clause must communicate a certain
    message.

Formation
  • Now that we looked at when to use the subjunctive
in the most basic form, we need to learn how to
    form the present subjunctive.
  • Start with the verb in the yo form- then drop
    the -o ending and add
  • -e, -es, -e, emos, éis, en for -ar verbs
  • Hablo Hable
  • -a, as, -a, áis, an for -er and -ir verbs
  • Comen Coman
  • Vives Vivas

12
Goals
  • This power point would probably be best used as
a supplement to a lesson given in class. The
subjunctive is always a very hard concept to
teach in Spanish and this power point would give
students notes and practice to look at at home
after I taught this lesson. The additional
websites at the end of the powerpoint would also
help students become familiar with the next
topics to be covered in the following class.
Learning a language requires practice and
repetition and if I had this power point posted
on a class website and required students to look
at it for homework I think it would really help
reinforce the information they already learned.

Lets Practice!
  • Conjugate these verbs into the subjunctive.
Click on each verb when youre done to check your
    answers!
  • Escribir usted form
  • Tener ustedes form
  • Conocer yo form

15
Dont be fooled!
  • Answer conozca
  • Remember conocer is irregular in the yo form. The
    subjunctive looks like this
  • Yo conozca
  • Tú conozcas
  • Usted/él/ella conozca
  • Nosotros conozacamos
  • Vosotros conozcáis
  • Ustedes/ellos/ellas conozcan

16
Recap!
  • Today we learned how to form the regular present
subjunctive in Spanish. Next class we will look
at irregular conjugations and verbs that are
irregular in the subjunctive. Visit these
websites before class and complete the sample
    quiz for extra practice!
  • Irregular verbs
  • Irregular conjugations
  • Sample quiz

17
How did you do?
  • Escriba

18
Bueno?
  • Answer Tengan
  • Tenir is irregular in the yo form, but its
    still tengo tenga.

19
Noun Clauses
  • Every clause contains a subject and a conjugated
verb. Some sentences have only one clause (this
is a simple sentence). Example Quiero agua I
want water. In this sentence agua is the noun
    describing what the speaker wants.
  • Other sentences, called complex sentences, have
both a main clause (independent) and a
    subordinate (dependent) clause.
  • Example Quiero que me traigas agua I want you
to bring me water. In this sentence que me
traigas agua is a clause acting as a noun.
Because the speaker is expressing a desire the
subjunctive is used in the subordinate clause.

SOL Addressed
  • Throughout the lesson I tried to help students
understand the connection between the subjunctive
use in English and Spanish. This is covered in
SOL SIII.7, which states The student will
reinforce his or her knowledge of connections
between the Spanish language and other subject
    areas.
  • Although the subjunctive is not specifically
mentioned in the Virginia SOLs for Spanish, most
school districts require students learn this verb
    form in Spanish III.
