Conceptual vs Procedural teaching
  • What?
  • Why?
  • Read the extracts from the Ofsted report

10
Conceptual teaching
  • Examples to contrast procedural and conceptual
    teaching.
  • Mixed fractions to improper (top heavy)
  • Mean
  • Area of a triangle

11
  • To multiply by 10 you add a zero
  • To divide by a fraction you turn the second
    fraction upside down and multiply
  • Change the side, change the sign
  • Two negatives make a positive
  • 101/10, so what is 20?
  • 5a2a is like 5 apples and two more apples
  • 1m 100cm so 1m2 cm2
  • The probability of it raining is 50-50 because
either it will or it wont
  • To multiply decimals, forget the point, multiply
like whole numbers and count the digits to put
    the point back in
  • Any more?

12
Task
  • Decide on an area of maths youd like to develop
  • Discuss the issues and misconceptions involved.
  • Plan how you might you teach this.
  • Maths framework
  • Share your thoughts and plans

13
Concepts developed by the group
  • Angles in a triangle tear up the triangle and
put the corners together to make a straight line.
  • Pythagoras uses multilink to make squares on the
short sides, then combine and reassemble to make
    a square on the hypotenuse
  • Pie charts pupils in a circle with categories
together, use string from the centre to show
    divisions.
  • Negative x negative develop patterns
  • -2x2, -2x1,2x0, -2x-1, -2x-2,
  • Expanding brackets by referring to area
  • Factors of numbers by making different rectangles.
