  • Use the map on page 129 in your book to identify
    the following
  • Mediterranean Sea, Rome, Adriatic Sea, Ionian
    Sea, Sicily, Tyrrhenian Sea, Tiber River,
    Corsica, Sardinia

Ancient Rome
  • The Romans were ancestors of the Latins, who came
    to Italy around 800 B.C.
  • Set up camp around the Tiber River.
  • Other groups had already lived in this area.
  • Etruscans
  • The Romans learned building techniques from the
    Etruscans and made their own alphabet based on
    the Etruscan Alphabet.

  • Around 509 B.C the Romans changed from a Monarchy
    to a Republic
  • Form of government where the officials are chosen
    by the people.
  • There is NO KING!!
  • Citizens swore allegiance to the Nation not a
    King or Queen
  • A republic also has a Constitution

Why does this matter
  • Today the U.S. is a republic
  • Like the Romans we swear allegiance to the nation
  • I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United
    States of America and to the republic for which
    it stands

Ancient Rome
  • In this government they created a Senate.
  • 300 members
  • Only made up of Patricians.
  • Patricians- upper class landholders.
  • Senator served for life and made laws.

  • Every year the Senate would elect two Consuls.
  • Consul- Supervised the business of government
    and commanded the Army.
  • Only served one term and had to answer to the
    senate.
  • These rules were set to make sure that no one had
    to much power in the government.
  • (Checks and balances)

Senate Power
  • In the event of a war the Senate could choose to
    place a dictator in charge.
  • Dictator- Ruler who has complete control over a
    government.
  • Could only rule for six months then had to give
    up power.

Plebeians
  • Plebeians- Farmers, Merchants, Artisans, Etc.
    Made up most of the Roman population.
  • Had little power and wanted equality.
  • BREAKTHROUGH 450 B.C.
  • Plebeians convince government to record laws on
    the 12 tablets.
  • Plebeians begin to elect their own officials.

  • Tribunes- Elected by Plebeians to protect their
    interests. Had Veto power.
  • Veto- Ability to block government actions.
  • Plebeians eventually forced the senate to place
    them in high offices, the senate, and become
    consuls.
