Introduction
  • Vermont is known for being the place to ski in
the East. It is filled from top to bottom with
    challenging and one-of-a-kind resorts, from
Stratton and Okemo in the south, to Stowe and Jay
Peak in the north, and Sugarbush and Killington
somewhere between. However, there are still
    potentially good mountains here undeveloped.

4
Purpose Scope
  • Our purpose is to find a mountain to place a new
ski resort on. We plan to use GIS and data from
www.vcgi.org to help us obtain our goal
  • We set criteria
  • Peak(s) greater than 2,500 ft
  • Short drive (10 miles) from I-89 and/or I-91
  • NOT part of an existing resort (duh also)
  • A nearby water source for man-made snow

5
Methodology
  • First, we chose to locate a new ski resort in the
    state of Vermont (duh)

6
Methodology (cont.)
  • We gathered different data layers, starting with
a colored hill-shade of the state.

7
Methodology (cont.)
  • Next, we found where all the 2,500 ft peaks of
    Vermont are (blue).

8
Methodology (cont.)
  • We added in where all the existing resorts are
    located (green dots).

9
Methodology (cont.)
  • We then added all the roads in Vermont (purple
lines). The sea of purple shows that getting
around the state is not a problem at all.

10
Methodology (cont.)
  • On the east side of the main ridge of the Green
Mountains, we found Mount Hunger. Its on the
Lamoille-Washington county line, and visible (I
think) from I-89 as you approach the
    Montpelier/Barre area from the north.

11
Methodology (cont.)
  • Land cover shows it is nothing but forests, with
an open water source within 5 miles (a little
pipework should let the resort access it for
    snow-making).

12
Just for fun
  • Heres the view from the top of Mount Hunger.

13
Results
  • So we chose Mount Hunger to be our new ski home.
It is a convenient drive for those coming south
or west of the mountain, and is the closest
possible resort for those east and northeast of
    the mountain.

14
Conclusion
  • First, this isnt easy, especially with an
    identical project done last semester
  • Even though Mount Hunger is in a 30 mile vicinity
of Smugglers Notch, Stowe, and Bolton Valley,
Mount Hunger is the closest to I-89. Stowe and
Smugglers Notch also dont have the benefit of
being near a populated area, whereas Mount Hunger
is a quick drive from the Barre/Montpelier area.
