Is rugby a safe sport for Americas youth? by

Lyle J. Micheli, MD Past president of the
American College of Sports Medicine Chairman

Fitness and Sports. Author of over 200
scholarly journal articles on sports medicine

in the United States
14
  • Is rugby a safe sport for Americas youth?
  • Summary of report by Lyle J. Micheli, MD
  • Support efforts to establish rugby teams in
    American high schools
  • Studies provide empirical evidence to address
    concerns about rugbys relative safety.
  • Rugby could not be as popular, played in over
100 countries, amongst so many different cultures
    if it were dangerous!
  • In fact, risk of rugby injury is relatively low
    compared to embraced American sports
  • such as football, ice hockey, and lacrosse
  • a fact borne-out by numerous studies assessing
    the risk of sports injury
  • Reasons quite straightforward to those of us who
    study sports medicine.

15
  • Is rugby a safe sport for Americas youth?
  • Summary of report by Lyle J. Micheli, MD
  • The main reason rugby players have a relatively
low risk of injury compared to football players
    is paradoxical
  • rugby players dont wear protective equipment
  • Rugby player dont have the same disregard for
the safety of his or her head, neck, and
shoulders when tackling or trying to break
    through a tackle.
  • The other reason is that unlike football, rugby
is a game of possession, not yardage. Rugby
players dont tackle by driving through the
    numbers,
  • Players are taught and must use their arms to
    wrap the opponent in tackle.
  • No blocking in rugby. Players without the ball
dont get hit when theyre not expecting it.

16
  • Is rugby a safe sport for Americas youth?
  • Summary of report by Lyle J. Micheli, MD
  • Injury rates
  • Compared to football, the incidence of injury in
    rugby is quite low
  • 10 percent in American club rugby compared to 52
    percent in NCAA college football
  • Results published in the peer-reviewed American
    Journal of Sports Medicine.
  • Subsequent studies have supported my results.
  • The scientific conclusion we must reach
  • Rugby is not as injurious as other NCAA status
    contact and collision sports
  • Rugby is a relatively safe sport to our young
    men and women.
