11Levels of Word kKnowledge Dictate Instructional
Strategies
- Which words are most important to understanding
the text? - How much prior knowledge will students have about
this word or its related concept? - Is the word encountered frequently?
- Does the word have multiple meanings?
- Is the concept significant and does it therefore
require pre-teaching?
12- Which words can be figured out from the context?
- Are there words that could be grouped together to
enhance understanding a concept? - What strategies could I use to help students
integrate the concept (and related words) into
their lives? - How can I make repeated exposures to the
word/concept productive and enjoyable? - How can I help students use the word/concept in
meaningful ways in multiple contexts?
13What Are Our Goals?
- Since vocabulary is an integral part of reading
and writing, it should contain elements of the
to, with, and by triad. - Vocabulary should help students to fully
understand what they hear and read. - Relevant, realistic, and rewarding
14Context Clues Activities
- Storybook Reading
- Dual Language Charts
- Classroom Labeling
- CD-Rom Books
- Vocabulary Self-Selection
- Personal contexts
- Cloze Procedure Oral, Zip, Maze
15Types of Cloze Procedures
- Oral Cloze use for instruction rich
discussion around the choices teacher reads
selection and students supply possibilities. - I went to bed with gum in my __________
and now theres gum on my _________. - Zip Cloze Constant feedback to keep them going
in the context. Cloze activity is put on a
transparency. Masking tape covers the words
chosen for deletion. Students skim for gist.
During discussion masking tape is zipped off,
revealing the correct answer. - Maze Cloze Students needing more support are
provided with several choices at each contextual
point. -
house - The boy on the hill lived in a yellow cat
-
umbrella.
16Stellaluna
- Read the book Stellaluna to the students
- As you read, have the children raise their
hands when they hear a word that means the same
as said. - Record the words, in random order, on chart
paper or on the whiteboard easel. - Using a transparency of the Stellaluna cloze
activity, have students use the words you have
written to fill in the blanks
Note Use this as a shared writing piece.
Many students wont be able to read the text on
their own but can follow along with you in a
shared reading activity.
