Havelock
Past and Present!

  • Havelock is proud to be the home of Marine Corps
Air Station Cherry Point, the 2nd Marine Air Wing
    and the Naval Air Depot.

3
How Havelock Got Its Name
  • Sir Henry Havelock
  • Hero of the Indian Mutiny
  • When the Atlantic and North Carolina tracks came
to a crossroads and a depot was built, it needed
a name. The local folks embraced the name of
General Henry Havelock for their budding
community. Sir Henry was a devout Christian and a
military genius. The story of his courage gives
    inspiration to this day.

6
History of Havelock
  • Permanent plantation sites as early as 1707
  • Home to many woodsmen, fishermen and farmers
    before the American Revolution
  • Action during the Civil War when elements of the
Rhode Island Heavy Artillery under the command of
General Ambrose Burnside stormed ashore on the
beach of what is now the Officer's Club at Cherry
Point and Carolina Pines Golf Country Club. The
Union forces quickly took control of the hamlet
and its railroad depot using Havelock as a
starting point for the capture of New Bern and
Fort Macon. The operation in March 1862 provided
the first major foothold in the South for the
    Yankees.

7
History of Havelock
  • Naval store" such as tar and turpentine had more
economic impact here than did farming. While most
people farmed, the greater income was produced
through the operation of turpentine distilleries
    and tar kilns.
  • With the advent of the steam engine during and
following the Civil War, wooden ships began to be
replaced and the market for tar, pitch and
    turpentine collapsed.

8
History of Havelock
  • From the late 1800s until the 1930s, the Havelock
area was a haven for hunters and fishermen.
Sportsmen came from all over the east coast to
enjoy the river and forests. Several old-timers'
albums boast photos of baseball stars Babe Ruth
and Christie Mathewson and then-famous cartoonist
Bud Fisher decked out in hunting gear in the
    local woods.

9
History of Havelock
  • Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point comes to
    Havelock 1941
  • appropriation of 14,990,000 for construction and
clearing of an 8,000 acre (32 km²) tract of
    swamps, farms and timberland.
  • Actual clearing of the site began on August 6,
1941, with extensive drainage and malaria control
work. Construction began in November just 17 days
before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Havelock Station Blockhouse
  • The Havelock Station blockhouse fort has been
added to the database of the American Fort
Network. The Civil War blockhouse, built by Union
forces in 1862, had previously been unknown to
historians who are creating a list of all
fortifications ever built in North America.
  •             The local blockhouse was built beside
the railroad trestle on the banks of Slocum Creek
as part of a group of fortifications to protect
the rail line from rebel troops. Full details,
including the local forts destruction during a
Confederate raid in 1864, appear in In This Small
Place. The story was documented by the author
from official U.S. regimental histories and rebel
dispatches sent during the War Between the
    States.
  •             A drawing of the blockhouse, made by
a Union soldier in 1863 and preserved within the
    Southern Historical Collection archives, also
    appears in the book.

    freedom."
