Sewards Icebox
  • In 1867, Secretary of State William Seward
    negotiated a deal with Russia to buy Alaska. The
    Russians agreed to sell for 7.2 million dollars.
    That comes to 2 cents an acre
  • People in America thought it was useless
    landthey called the purchase Sewards Folly,
    and called Alaska Sewards Icebox.

    sailors were killed.

  • He passed laws to make sure foreigners did not
