Title: Brittany Harrison

1
Lumpkin County Alternative Education Center
  • Brittany Harrison
  • NGCSU Service
  • Learning Project
  • 2003

2
What is the Lumpkin County Alternative Education
Center?
  • Also known as the Mountain Education Center
    (MEC).
  • Place where students are sent when they are
    removed from day school.
  • Where students can work towards getting high
school credits in an alternative setting.

3
Who attends MEC?
  • Students who have been dismissed/expelled from
    day school.
  • Students that may have gotten behind in day
school and need to earn some high school credits.

4
Why did I chose the MEC?
  • To take on a challenge.
  • I wanted to learn how to deal with these types
    students.
  • To convey the idea to the students that they can
learn and are very capable of becoming something
    great in todays world.

5
My Job
  • My job consisted of tutoring/teaching students in
small group settings or sometimes individually in
    the area of math.
  • I also tutored in other areas such as science or
    English when needed.
  • Involved in rewriting some of the math curriculum
    used at the MEC.

6
My Experience
  • I learned many lessons I can take with me into my
    own classroom.
  • It was a challenge, but it brought me joy to see
    the students succeed.

7
What I Have Learned
  • All students can learn.
  • Everyone can learn something.
  • It is also unfair to make hasty judgements on the
students and their ability to learn.

8
Other things I have learned
  • I learned new things about my subject area just
    by teaching the students.
  • Teaching is not easy, but seeing a student
succeed after putting much time and effort into
    teaching him is very rewarding.

9
How can I use what I have learned in my own
classroom?
  • Use patience.
  • Believe in my students ability.
  • Encourage my students to become all they can be.
  • Do not make hasty judgements on students in my
    classroom.
