Ingredients
  • The main ingredient found in cigarettes is
    tobacco
  • More than 4,000 individual chemicals have been
identified in tobacco as well as tobacco smoke
  • Of these 4,000, 60 were chemicals classified as
    carcinogens (cancer-causing)
  • Carbon Monoxide, tar and ammonia have all been
    found in cigarettes
  • Accurate health risks are hard to make, because
manufactures do not give the precise amount of
    additives used

5
Nicotine Addiction
  • Addiction is defined as a compulsive use of a
    product despite the harmful consequences
  • Nicotine is the addictive drug found in tobacco
  • Nicotine is absorbed through smoke in the lungs,
or through smokeless tobacco in the mouth and
    nose
  • Nicotine produces both physical and psychological
addictions, which makes it very hard for users to
    stop
  • 70 of all smokers claim to want to quit smoking
  • 35 of smokers make an actual attempt to quit
each year, with only 5 having a success rate

6
Health Concerns Cancer
If only I had read this PowerPoint
  • Cigarette smoke is responsible for at least 30
    of all cancer deaths
  • Major cancer areas found due to smoking are
lung, larynx, oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus,
    bladder, and stomach
  • Lung cancer is the leading cancer death in both
    men and women
  • 87 of all lung cancer deaths are attributed to
    smoking

7
Other Health Concerns
  • Smoking is also the cause of other severe
    diseases including heart disease, aneurysms,
    bronchitis, emphysema, and strokes
  • It can create severe complications with people
    suffering from asthma and pneumonia
  • Smoking has a negative effect on female
    fertility, causing miscarriages, premature
births, stillbirths, infant deaths, and has also
been attributed to low birth weights
  • SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has been
    linked to smoking
  • Other health complications are gum disease,
cataracts, bone thinking, and peptic ulcers

8
Quality Quantity of Life
  • On average, male smokers lose 13.2 years of life
    due to smoking
  • Women on average lose 14.5 years of life because
    of smoking
  • In 2000, more than 8.6 million people were
suffering from at least one chronic disease as a
    result of cigarette use
  • The diseases which occurred most were emphysema,
heart attacks, chronic bronchitis, strokes and
    cancer

9
Benefits of Quitting
  • According to the Surgeon General
  • - Quitting has immediate and major health
    benefits
  • - Former smokers on average will live longer
than those who continue to smoke
  • - Women who stop smoking before, or during

the first trimester of pregnancy reduce the
    chance of low birth weight
  • - Quitting smoking decreases the risk of lung
cancer, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung
    diseases

10
Conclusion
  • 44.5 million American adults are current smokers
  • Cigarettes contain 4,000 additives, 60 of which
