Title: Tire Pressure Monitoring Issues an Industry Segment Approach

1
Tire Pressure Monitoring Issues an Industry
Segment Approach
  • Charlie Gorman
  • Equipment Tool Institute
  • November 4, 2004

2
Industry Segments Impacted by TPMS
  • OEMs and their dealerships
  • Aftermarket Wheel Manufacturers
  • Service Equipment Manufacturers i.e.
  • Tire machines
  • Scan tool manufacturers
  • Service facilities

3
Wheel Manufacturers
  • What wheel dimensions are critical to proper
    wheel sensor installation and operation?
  • Are there any alloys or other materials that
could interfere with proper radio transmission?
  • Does size count?

4
Tire Machine Manufacturers
  • TPMS devices can be easily damaged
  • Direct TPMS systems use pressure transducer /
transmitters integrated with the valve stem.
Some OEMs require that the TPMS device be removed
from the wheel before the tire is removed from
    the rim.
  • When breaking the bead, care must be taken
    regarding valve stem position.

5
Broken Sensor
6
Scan Tool Manufacturer
  • Is a scan tool required to diagnose system
    problems?
  • If so what can be diagnosed?
  • Faulty sensor? specific to location?
  • Faulty receiver? specific to location?
  • Sensor Battery low.

7
Scan Tool Manufacturer
  • If a sensor is moved (rotate tires) or replaced,
does the system have to be reprogrammed to
    recognize the new sensors?
  • Is a scan tool or J2534 reprogramming device
required to perform the reprogramming event?

8
Two Reprogramming Methods
  • Cadillac - There are two reprogramming methods.
You must use the J-41760 magnet when a new sensor
is installed. During tire rotation, you can use
either the magnet or your Tech 2.

9
Service Facilities
  • What vehicles are equipped with TPMS?
  • Is it a direct or indirect system?
  • What precautions need to be taken when removing
    and replacing tires?
  • Can tires be rotated without reprogramming?
  • If a system sets a code other than low pressure,
is the shop equipped and trained to fix it?
  • If enhanced wheels are installed, will they
accept the TPMS sensors without difficulty?
  • What wheel size restrictions exist as a result of
    TPMS systems?

10
What needs to be done?Wheel Manufactures
  • SEMA members get dimension information Directly
    from OEMs
  • Meetings held in May
  • ETI pledges to offer help in this area using NPIG
info from Tech Week (with OEM permission)
  • Tech Weeks held in June and December
  • NPIG (New Product Information Guidelines)

15
What Needs to Be Done?Equipment manufacturers
  • Tire Machine Manufacturers need to continue their
    relationship with OEMs
  • Gather and pass along tire RR info. That
    protects TPMS systems from damage.
  • Scan Tool Manufacturers need to continue
receiving bit byte information that allows
aftermarket scan tools to reset and Reprogram
    TPMS systems where necessary

16
Scan Tools diagnosis and repair
  • Through the NASTF agreement all OEMs have agreed
to share the information required to design and
    manufacture aftermarket diagnostic tools
  • The Equipment subcommittee has asked OEMs to add
TPMS modules to the NASTF reporting Matrix
  • Is a scan tool used at the dealership? If so,
have you provided the info necessary to duplicate
    the function?

17
Scan Tools - Reprogramming
  • Through the NASTF agreement all OEMs have agreed
to share the information required to design and
    manufacture aftermarket reprogramming tools
  • The Equipment subcommittee has asked OEMs to add
TPMS modules to the NASTF reprogramming matrix
  • Is reprogramming required?
  • Is it done using J2534 standard, or some other
    method?
  • Is OEM software required?

18
What Needs to be done?Service Facilities
  • Use OEM and aftermarket service information to
    identify models using TPMS
  • Diagnostics, precautions, reprogramming, etc.
  • Use tire machine manufacturer TSBs and warnings
  • Use NASTF matrix and your scan tool manufacturer
to determine scan tool requirements and
    capabilities.
  • If changing equipment (wheels / tires) on a
vehicle, make sure replacement will allow TPMS to
    function properly (check manufacturer
    specifications)

19
The Future
  • Im convinced that the aftermarket information
providers will at some point consolidate all this
information into a condensed TPMS book or
database If you think there is a market for
this, contact your favorite manual provider and
tell them to get on it.
