Welcome to Kemarok !
3
History
  • emarok lies in a picturesque
mountainous countryside in the North of Slovakia
    below the peaks of the
  • High Tatra. The river Poprad flows
across the town, outlining the historic route of
    the approximately
  • north-south-bound roads.
  • In the literary documents dealing with the
development of Kemarok it has been generally
    stated that the town of
  • the present days was originated by fusion of
three settlements. The important trade roads
    north-sound-bound,
  • west-east-bound crossed there, facilitating trade
contacts between Poland and Hungary. Due to the
    influence of
  • developing trade transport the area developed
into an important and huge market, trade and
    cultic centre. The
  • process of the development of the settlement
began to take place probably already in the 10th
    century so that in
  • the first half of the 13th century when the
Saxons arrived almost the whole territory of the
    town was inhabited.
  • Already in the 13th century there were several
remarkable stone and brick-built objects in the
    town. Besides the
  • parish church of the Holy Cross there was also
the church of St. Michael which was later pulled
    down. The con-
  • structions of towers and bastions cannot be
supposed to have taken place already in the first
    stage. In the year
  • 1380 Kemarok became a free royal town with many
privileges. It was actually a period of greatest
    building acti-
  • vity. In the years 1433-1544 the town owned one
of the most important rights the right of store.
    The Hussite
  • invasion to Spi region in 1433 was reflected in
the history of Kemarok as well. The town became
    their strong-
  • hold. In the year 1641 Master George from Spiska
Sobota build the Town Hall. Throughout the
    15-17th century
  • the citizens of Kemarok reconstructed their city
within the town walls. In the year 1583 the
    castle was transfor-
  • med into luxurious renaissance one by Sir.Thököly
whose it became a property. In the 17th century
    in all houses
  • the renaissance artistic elements such as vaults,
windows, portals, galleries became to appear. The
    renaissance
