Title: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

1
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
  • Mandy Lynch

2
What is Waste?
  • Waste is anything released into the environment
that could have a negative impact on that
    environment.
  • The average American throws away 4.5 pounds of
    trash (waste) a day!
  • Waste could be anything from paper to diapers or
    food to batteries.

3
What can I do to help? The Three Rs
  • REDUCE!
  • Reduce means to make something smaller or use
less, resulting in a smaller amount of waste.
  • REUSE!
  • Reusing something means to use a material again
in its original form, or to give it to someone
    else who can use it.
  • RECYCLE!
  • Recycling is when you save a reusable material
and take it to where it can be made into
    something new.

4
How can I REDUCE?
  • Buy less buy only what you need and use all of
    what you buy.
  • Use durable items instead of disposable ones.
For example, buy plastic plates that you can used
many times instead of paper ones that you throw
    away after one use.
  • Refuse store bags. Carry the items you purchase
from the store by hand, or bring your own cloth
    bag to use.

5
How can I REUSE?
  • Donate used clothes to Goodwill or other
    charities.
  • Use cloth diapers instead of disposable ones.
  • If your bicycle breaks, fix it instead of
throwing it away and getting a new bike.

6
How can I RECYCLE?
  • Almost everything at home and school can be
recycled! Check to see how your community
    recycles.
  • Dont throw anything away that can be recycled!
  • Some recyclable materials include
  • Aluminum cans
  • Cardboard
  • Magazines
  • Paper
  • Plastic bags
  • Tires
  • Wood
  • Paint
  • Electronic equipment

About Me!
  • My name is Mandy Lynch. I am 22 years old and
in my fifth year at Western Michigan University.
I am an Elementary Education Major, with Early
Childhood and English minors. I will be
completing my Elementary Education Internship in
the spring, and I am really excited to graduate!
  • My hometown is Portage, MI, where I live on a
farm with my parents, Mick and Lisa. We have six
horses and three dogs, and I have pretty much
lived in a barn for most of my life. My sister,
Laura, who is 25, won the World Championship
Morgan Horse Competition in 1997 for English
Pleasure. I am planning on showing again once I
graduate, and teaching my niece, Hannah, how to
ride. She is only a year old, but I love her
    more than anything!
  • The newest addition to my family is my Beta
fish, Frosted. He was named by a four-year-old
whose mom would not let her name her own fish
Frosted, because It is not a noun! Her Betas
    name is Corn Flake.
  • I was a cheerleader here at Western for four
years, and I loved it! I coached two season of
JV Cheerleading at Portage Central High School,
and it is definitely something I would like to do
again. I decided not to do it this year because
I will not have time while completing my
internship. I do not cheer anymore, but my
boyfriend, Anthony, is on Westerns football
team, so I go to all the games anyway! Im his
personal cheerleader and 1 fan! Go Broncos! (He
is in the picture above on the left. He has no
    hair and a big smile.)
  • Every free second I get, I am reading or
running. Anthony and my favorite date spot is
Barnes Noble where we read, relax and drink
mocha frapachinos. I just finished reading Emma
McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, The Nanny Diaries,
and I loved it! I also just joined West Hills
Athletic Club, which is like my second home now.
  • I currently work at a child care center in the
infant and toddler room. I tutor a ESL student
(English as a Second Language) twice a week. I
am also the Volunteer Coordinator of Sigma Tau
Delta, the English Honors Society here at WMU.
  • I live by the quote Do what you love and love
    what you do!
