The History of North Carolina
North Carolina, one of the original thirteen
states, consists of 53,821 square miles. The
state of Indian Territory until 1629 when King
Charles I of England declared all lands south of
Virginia to be part of of the British Empire.
The first permanent settlement was started in
the 1650s when farmers moved into the Albemarle
Sound area. In 1677 economic and religious
quarrels with the provisional governor in
Virginia led to restrictions on shipping from
North Carolina. These restrictions added to ill
feelings in the state and they also hampered the
growth of the states significant tobacco crop.
The settlers continued to resist the colonial
rulings from England and Virginia and , in an
attempt to restore order, the British formed the
separate state of North Carolina in 1729 and sent
a deputy governor to the area. Meanwhile,
the first town had been settled in 1700, and it
was called Bath. After this, the population rose
rapidly and settlements spread across the eastern
and central (or Piedmont) part of the state. In
1735, the boundaries between North and South
Carolina were agreed upon but the formal survey
was not conducted until 1815. Before the
Revolutionary War, there was open hostility
between the new settlers of the Piedmont and the
Cherokee Indians in the western part of the
state. In 1775, however, they joined together to
fight the British and, in that same year, the
Indians and settlers joined forces and chose
their governor. When the Civil War started,
North Carolina was somewhat reluctant to leave
the union, but the state fought with the
Confederacy until the end of the war.
