  • Lucille Sayles was born on June 27, 1936 in
    Depew, New York.
  • She was raised by her parents Samuel and Thelma
    Moore Sayles.

Family
  • Lucille Sayles married Fred Clifton in 1958
    becoming Lucille Clifton.
  • Lucille has six children.
  • Lucilles great grandmother, who killed the white
    father of her children, was the first black woman
    legally hanged in Virginia.
  • Many of Lucilles ancestors were brought to
    America as slaves.

Education
  • Lucille Sayles attended Howard University from
    1953 to 1945 at the age of sixteen.
  • She also attended Fredonia State Teachers
    College.
  • From 1958 to 1960 she worked as a claims clerk in
    the New York State Division of Employment.
  • From 1960 to 1971 she worked as a literature
    assistant in the Office of Education in
    Washington, D.C..

Awards/ Recognitions
  • The New York Times named her First book of poems,
    Good Times, one of the ten best books of 1969
  • Her most recent book, Blessing the Boats New
    and Selected Poems, won the National Book Award
  • Lucille is the only poet in history to have two
    books, "Next" and "Good Woman Poems and a
    Memoir,nominated for a Pulitzer prize at once.
