  • Integrating the Internet and other Distance
    Resources

3
Opening Questions
  • Who has had DL experiences?
  • What types of DL are you familiar with?
  • Why do people use DL?
  • Would you (have) used DL for your coursework?
  • What do you think is good/bad about DL?
  • What resources do you know of?

4
Reaching a World of Resources
  • What is Distance Learning?
  • Instructor and Learner separated by time or
    space.
  • Electronic, print resources, voice
communications, (or combinations) used to bridge
    the gap.
  • US Distance Learning Association
  • the acquisition of knowledge and skills through
    mediated information and instruction. DL
encompasses all technologies and supports the
pursuit of lifelong learning for all.
  • Historically, Distance Education meant
correspondence study. Today, audio, video, and
computer technologies are more common delivery
modes." (from "What is Distance Education" by
    Virginia Steiner, DLRN 1995.)

5
Some Definitions
  • Dist Education v. Dist Learning
  • Telecommunications.
  • DL Past ITV as supplement.
  • DL Present Increased student access, clientele
    expansion, competition
  • DL Future Moving toward more life-like
    interactions. Blending in real-life settings.

6
Research on Distance Learning
  • Similar effectiveness results as reported under
    traditional instruction methods. In addition,
student attitudes about DL are generally
    positive.
  • In higher ed, DL is providing UG and graduate
degrees to students in offices, at community
colleges and at various receive sites. Students
are earning degrees by satellite, audio, and over
    the Internet.
  • Research on DL apps for PK-12, as well as in
adult learning and training settings, strongly
suggests that DL is an effective means for
    delivering instruction.
  • The intent is not necessarily to replicate
    face-to-face instruction. Interactivity is
accomplished via telephone (one-way video and
two-way audio), two-way video or graphics
    interactivity, two-way computer hookups, or
    response terminals.
  • Give Lagunitas Example in Class

7
Current DL Issues
  • The inventor of TV dreamed of it being a great
educational tool! He also thought it would bring
    everyone together.
  • Digital Divide SES is greatest barrier.

Other Questions Issues
8
Other Questions Issues
  • DL Effectiveness Most studies say same or better
    than traditional.
  • Characteristics Affecting Success
  • Degree of interaction
  • Ongoing support and
  • Technical problems
  • Who Chooses Distance Learning
  • FT working adults, 25-50 yrs, married.
  • Now are becoming younger and FT student.

9
Other Questions Issues
  • Student Characteristics of Success
  • ? internal locus of control computer
    self-efficacy organizational skills
    responsibility
  • Cost Effectiveness of DL
  • Technology hardware/software
  • Transmission Start-up, feed, maintenance
  • Maintenance Repair or update equipment
  • Infrastructure Network and telecomm at
    origin/dest.
  • Production Tech and personnel support for dev.
  • Personnel Hiring someone to run DL

10
Delivery Systems for DLWhat ways you can think
of?

    expanded it to universities.
  • IP address Floating or static/fixed.
  • Email name_at_host.domain
  • Uniform Resource Locators host/domain/folders..

Developing a Web Site
  • In pairs, outline the steps that would be
involved in developing a web site, from
    conception to end-user.
  • Work on an iBook (class or café?), as youll want
to insert or rearrange some of your steps as you
go. As you go through the steps, list any
    technologies that are relevant (software,
    hardware).
  • Pairs will share results to class. Submit via
    AppleTalk and present on SmartBoard?
